Sigma 12-24mm at Birddogs

Today Glen and I went to Birddogs to pick up my Sigma 12-24mm. I had the pleasure of meeting Birddogs wife and I must say the food that she prepared for us was SUPERB. I also had the opportunity to put the fabled 200-400VR on my camera.

Hey that pic of Glen with the 200-400, is that his own camera he's holding? Back from the doctors...

Edit: yeah, my 1000th should have coincided with the beginning of 2005. Nonetheless, I shall attempt to keep my postcount at 1000 for as long as I can, this means going back and editing all my posts and not creating new ones.

Thanks Onyx - not sure about the camera Glen is holding (he has got his camera back) as this is a picture that Birddog gave Glen this afternoon and as he held it up I took the shot with the 200-400VR - complex ah!

If you answer this looks like we will have to congratulate you on 1000 posts. . .

Is the Sigma 12-24 have an aperture of f4.5-5.6?

How does this compare to the Nikkor 12-24. How many bits of glass for each lense? Don't have time to do research on this dialup connection in france....3hours per month with excess billing astronomical

we're celebrating NY overhere, so no time for us to open the lenses and hand count the glasses in them, why do you need to know how many pieces of glass in those lenses?
The Sigma has f. 4.5 and the Nikon start at f.4.
Wait till you're back to Victoria and you can find it out easy, if you're not rush in buying them today in France, and I think all the shops in France close for the NY holiday also

Someone will kill you instantly because someone will
think it is a launcher for RPGs.
I am getting more and more convinced that there is something with
blokes and the size of their lenses.
Just kidding; I guess lens envy is setting in.

Not obsessed Birddog, just trying to do a bit of research and thought into lenses while Im not in a place to buy. I wont buy until Im back in Australia. Ive been doing a lot of landscape photography and 18MM is quite nice but to get some really wide panos 12MM would be even nicer. Could always use a tripod I guess and stitch but dont have one of those yet either.

Anyway bye for now. Typing from the supermarket. Think they have broadband.

That’s exactly what I was thinking - there is one thing I can say straight away, this lens has fantastic contrast (Sigma)

While I don't feel qualified to post a review, I would like to show these shots.

The contrast is a nightmare for any lens really (not to mention CCD dynamic range!) and I think it demonstrates the relative lack of chromatic aberration from the Sigma. The crop is a full-res of the potential problem area, this result is way better than the kit lens (for instance), not that I've got a direct comparison shot to prove it! But I've got a lot taken with the kit lens under much less stringent conditions which show lots more CA than this.
