Thought it was about time I posted some pics. First try at lightning pics. C&C most welcome, and any tips to improve :)

Technique - take heaps and hope to catch some strikes LOL, got a few keepers.

Hope everyone had a great Christmas.

Cheers
Judy

G'day Judy,
If these are your first try then it looks like you've done really well (better than I have).

Was scrolling through them but stopped at #4, not only a good lightning shot but also with some interest with the pier... Good stuff...

Thanks Kerry and Andrew.

I agree - #4 is my favourite I think. I was really pleased with the results, didn't have a clue what I was doing :D. Took heaps just trying to grab some strikes.

Much better results once it got darker. I want to try leaving the shutter open and holding a dark card or something across it but I didn't have anything suitable with me, it wasn't really a planned outing.

I tried a variety of f stops and shutter speeds, just need to investigate the successful shots to see which worked better.

Thanks again
Judy

Nice Shots! I particularly like number 5 myself. Hopefully we'll get some more storm activitiy this arvo (its sure humid enough for it).

Yeah nice shots!!!

The lights on the jetty have an interesting look. I have never seen the light behave like that. It is not really a normal "starburst" that you would usually expect. The light is almost scattered. Have you used a particular filter or technique to get this or is it just chance?

Thanks Shane, yup I know that now LOL.

Mind you, with that first shot it was pouring down, and quite gloomy so that helped.

Cheers

Thanks a lot Joel.

Yep, noticed the odd lights. I've shot at the pier at night a lot and never had that effect before. I didn't do anything different to usual, and no filters etc so no idea what was going on there.

Same lens, tripod, variety of exposure times etc - no clues :D

Regards
Judy

Great work Judy, lighting shots have a special place for me as I love storms and being out in the thick of things, and the next best thing is a well captured lightning strike in camera. Your shots have great atmosphere and really re-create that electric mood of the storm!

My only advice: print them out and see how they look on paper :)
