Afternoon clouds - bye bye sunsets

Not sure if this should go in the rant section, but is anyone else in Queensland and Northern NSW completely frustrated by the afternoon clouds that spoil any chance of a decent evening photo shoot?
For the past fortnight or so I've been trying to nail a series of long exposure, twilight photos around the Gold Coast. And every afternoon the clouds come over the mountain range and turn the glorious late arvo sunshine into a muddy, diffused gloom.
It wouldn't be so bad if these clouds were proper storm clouds - at least then we'd get some badly needed rain and I could even shoot some lightning strikes. But they don't even have the decency to do that. They're mostly high altitude clouds and they disappear a couple hours after sunset.
Oh well, its one of the perils of living in the sub-tropics I suppose. I can't wait for winter and dry, fine days and cool nights.
