Outdoor Portrait Minimeet

At the rainforest get together on Saturday there was some more discussion about an outdoor portrait shooting mini-meet. This was a follow-on from an earlier discussion when we had the studio session.
I propose that we have a meet at Bribie Island in about a months time?
An afternoon session on one of the following dates: 29/30 April or 6/7 May.
Any interest?????

Steve ... 29/March has already passed
Think you mean 29/30 April ? And 6/7 May. The poll options are all buggered
I would be interested for 29/30 April.

Dion wins the prize
The dates in the poll should read 29/30 April 6/7 May
Does that make the idea any more attractive

Steve I will endeavour to be there whatever the dates, however who is going to run the workshop?

Not having been party to the original discussions, what would an outdoor portrait session involve? What is the workshop element?

Steve - if it's anything like the indoor portrait session you held, will be brilliant
(I finally learned how to use my flash ) ....
we are working for all 4 days
, but seeing it's an afternoon session, may abe able to make it ... would definitely try anyway

Steve
Saturday 29 Apr sounds good, would have to leave about 5.30 though as working Brissy southside at 7.00pm.
Would give me a chance to learn how to use my new toy that arrived this morning, sb800.

It looks like the 29th April suits a few people.
Venue suggestions anyone??
Roma Street Parklands, Southbank, City Botanic or perhaps somewhere a little more exotic??
I am working on a
model /
models. Don't forget that this months ES Challenge is the self portrait

Having not done anything like this, should we opt for somewhere with a touch more privacy? What about "up the back" of Mt Coo-tha Botanic Gardens - its fairly quiet and away from most of the traffic, and there is a reasonable amount of parking. Course I have no idea if it provides any good settings for portrait type photos.

29th April is the Sat of the May Day long weekend and I'll be away.
The following weekend is fine, but majority rules so don't change it just on my account.

Nothing pressing on any of the dates at this stage so I'd be very keen to attend. Agree with Dion that Mt Coot-tha would be a good venue with Roma Street Parklands second. The Parklands has many varied terrains and backdrops plus the urban jungle as well but parking there can be a dog.

Steve. What happened to the Bribie idea? What about somewhere like the warf at Redcliff, Manley or do you prefer the western side of the city?

I'd be very interested in attending as long as the meet doesn't clash with the Brisbane Lions at home.

Craig, good question about Bribie. The answer is I am not sure - I think that I dropped the ball on that on.
I know very little about outdoor portraiture but I do know that most pros choose somewhere with filtered light or do it in soft light ie early morning / late afternoon. Bribie would offer a variety of settings as would Mt Coot-tha Botanic. My initial thoughts would be that Redcliffe Jetty might not provide a very long timeframe of suitable light. Manly would be similar I think although there is some reasonable tree cover there. Bribie would even out the travel times a bit.
This has to be a collective descision so keep the ideas rolling

Steve and others
I'd like to get involved in this one also.
Should by then have my new Nikkor AF 85 1.4 which I hear is a great portrait lens.
Hopefully there will be someone who can give a bit of guidance as I haven't done much portrait stuff to date.
A good venue, couple of gorgeous
models ?? - hey what more could you want

Simon be nice.
Anna who
modelled for us at the studio session has volunteered again and I am trying to coax her into bring a friend.
I know Barry Finlayson who used to be the head of the photography dept. at Griffith. Do you want me to ask him along?? Bear in mind that his presence might make it quite a 'structured' afternoon.

Steve,
after the success of our last workshop, I think we could probably sort things out ourselves but it's your call. Not sure if 'structure' is what we really need...
Be great if Anna can come along - she was a good sport last time and very photogenic.

I'm keen. Either 29th April or 6th May is good for me.
I was at Mt Coot-tha Bot. Gardens yesterday and there are some great, quiet places on top of the hill. You can all drive your cars in, too (no lugging of gear!!!)
Cheers

Bribie would have been good half way between Bne and the SC. I doubt that I would attend at Mt Cootha...it is a waterbag trip.

I think that we need a vote on the location. From the recent discussion we have Oneputt & Slider who would prefer Bribie, Finch & Gecko for Mt Coot-tha. 2 a side. I will sit on the fence because I have no preference and I think that both are great locations.
Bernie, sadly I don't think that your suggestion is going to get up this time.
Can the rest of you please indiciate your preferred location!
Simon, I think that I agree that formal structure is not required. The question was asked as to who was going to facilitate so I offered up Barry as a suggestion.

My vote is for Mt Coot-tha but only because the last two mini-meets (Cooloola, which I went to, and Buderim, which I couldn't) were on the Sunshine Coast. I think it's our turn this time.
Not sure if we need a 'facilitator', as such. I'm happy for it to be just a social gathering during which we toss around some ideas, try out some poses and lighting set-ups and do it by trial and error.

I will adjudicate here and despite Simons attempt to cast 2 votes we will record only one... the count is now 3 for Mt Coot-tha and 2 for Bribie

I'm going to sit on the fence - either is fine for me, but I'll be coming straight from work, so from Eagle Farm......
Mt Cootha is on the way home to Ipswich, so is better ...but whatever you guys decide is cool.

I would prefer a Brisbane location if possible. Weekends always work out crazy for me, so travel may become awkward.

Does Anna have a preference? If she's coming along to
model for us, she should probably have a say too.
