newbie question, how do i submit photos for this comp?
Posted:

Step 1: register for the comps by sending (PM) me your email address, and preffered name (your user name on my system will be d70USERNAME eg d70redline)
Step 2: read all the rules (paying special reguards to what PP steps are allowed and the inclusion of valid EXIF, and also anonyminity)
Step 3: after submit is open and before comp closes email me (scott.collis*the at symbol*anu.edu.au) your entry
up to a certain date I will check entries for error and allow re-submission...

How about posting some images of the prizes? Not a request, just an idea.
Give us all something to drool over.

Fantastic prizes once again.
The subject begs for a triptych - no go of course.
However, perhaps down the track we could contemplate a comp where a series is required. Say three interrelated shots. Could be interesting.

The person who decides the theme has some power to bend the rules of the comp...
So win
(but yes.... No series this time....)

Greg,
That, in fact, was my very first thought. I've already discussed this with Scott and you're right - it's a no go.

Would be an interesting idea to try and gather all the EXIF data from a triptych...

I got the joke. It's an old theme redone.
Try this one;
A competition is run,
1st prize is a weekend stay holiday in Canberra.
2nd prize is two weeks holiday in Canberra
3rd prize is a house and land package in Canberra.

its true, the first prize is the best. add another 300,000 people and then canberra may be a little more interesting, but generally i find canberra misses out to sydney more and more as its 3 hours up the road.
Note, this is mainly a rant about bands

Neeper, you can enter (and win) just not receive the prize.
Enter anyway just to see how you go.

hehe, if I win, can I give someone the prize on my behalf? And maybe they can send it to me? That's a good loophole!

Sorry for being thick. Is 31/3 the last day a pic can be taken or is there a later closing pic date (as opposed to the submission date)

LOL... That's the mistake I made last time...
My (corrected) understanding is that photos can be taken up until 30th April and can be submitted any time after 1st April until 30th April...

With the theme being "3", I'd imagine that that's normal.

I must say I'm having a hard time getting enthused about this particular project. I'm sure it's my own shortfall but every time I think about it I just get bored. Any thoughts on arousing my lethargic state?

I started by being too clinical. Everywhere I looked I saw three somethings (3 people, 3 trees, 3 cows, 3 ducks!) - I was getting nowhere. Then I started taking pics and looking for the threes in a less literal way. I then found quite a few pics that met the theme and got excited about what I was doing.
Summary: don't think the theme too hard!

Anyone can make a picture with three elements in it. A child with a PAS could take a picture for the theme three.
How many pictures of three people in a crowd, or three telegraph poles in perspective, or three cows in a field, or three pieces of fruit are we going to get?
I chose the theme, so I guess I'm biased, but it had me thinking.
I would love to see a picture of a bowl of fruit if it was lit with the same light that Vermeer painted.
I guess its how you interpret the subject. For example, going back to an earlier discussion about Kubrick:
The screenplay reads:
"Boy is cycling around hotel, camera is following him, he turns the corner and sees two little girls holding hands"
Doesnt sound particularly exciting, but when you see Kubricks result it makes it leap out.
Just my thoughts. I'll choose a better one next time

Good point Rokkstar. I see you read the Kubrick link I posted. That was one of the parts that really stuck out.
I do hope you didn't take my post as a complaint--it wasn't so don't feel like I hate your theme choice, but I need help in getting off my ass. One part that gets me thinking is having some sort of three way reflection or something, but even that doesn't turn me on that much.
Anyone can make a picture with three elements in it. A child with a PAS could take a picture for the theme three
I think that is precisely the problem. Getting my thoughts to a point where I can plan a photo that is worthy of submitting to a competition is a lot of work, or it isn't stimulating on the way or something.
At first I though about doing a self portrait of myselves reflection in a puddle with a tiny ripple in it and some stars in the background. that's the photo I wanted and call it "three elements or something" then I thought about shooting whatever I wanted and including three in the title. Last night I actually thought about drawing a huge number 3 in a gravel field with a stick and then attach a camera to a kite and take pics of it. Not exactly boring, but not really feasible either.

Dave - photograph 3 Martians in a field and not only would you win the challenge but would also become very rich overnight

Not at all.
I understand what you mean precisely. When I have to design something that is within a style I dont particularly find that exciting I get very bored.
I Like your reflection idea.
I'm not entering this challenge this time, but my thoughts were about the way the subject was lit and composed rather than focussing on the three aspect too much. It's an important element, but dont let it take over.
A few ideas I had were the smoke from three candles at different points in their burning, each extinguished a second apart and photographing the resulting smoke patterns. WIth the lighting enhancing the texture of both the candles and the smoke.
ANyway, I hope you find some inspiration from somewhere mate, and I look forward to seeing your pic.
Matt

A reminder that time is getting on!!!
I have three entries...
There are two threads of importance in the shooting assignments thread and I insist that all competitors read them:
*The updated rules thread
*Comp open for self submission thread
Just a point: I will allow for re-entry for mistakes up to a point in time... I might but might not be up at midnight on the submission date so is that a gamble you are willing to take??
Also another reminder: you can enter a full res image
So get out there and start thinking in threes and GOOD LUCK!!
Birddog has offered a SB-800..
But more importantly the winner gets to choose the theme for the Aniversery challenge!!!

Sorry guys about this one.

Mate plenty have entered, 11 a few days ago, and that is why we call it a challenge. Personally how hard is 3? Get 3 eggs (or whatever) stick them on a white board and voila, three. I predict a late rush.

I think we have to change the rule of the challenge:
To encourage more members in participating the next challenges, I have a following suggestion:
"" All the challenger has to submit his/her proposed theme for the next challenge with their submitted photo and it will be kept secret until the date of announcement the first prize on the current challenge **
This idea is helping the challengers well prepare his/ her decision of choosing the theme upfront not leave it as at the last minutes and may caused some harder choice with rush.

Glen, I don't think it's that hard of a topic, but moreso find it difficult picking between the possible choices!
I mean hell... I have three shots for the subject of three that I can't bloody pick between!
