I know this is really early but anyway...gives people time to plan. lol

event and circuit info is here:
http://www.v8supercars.com.au/calendars ... =282&ind=M

i will definitely be going on the Friday cos the crowds and transport should be heaps easier. and probably on the saturday. wont be the on sunday.

for anyone interested, i will be getting a paddock pass to stroll thru the pits and intend to spend pretty much the full day there from 7am till about 3pm.

plenty of time to save your money and plan for an annual leave day !! i;ve never taken pics at a car race so i will have no idea what i'm doing. input and attendance from the revheads that do this often is welcome !!

I still do not understand this event.

I love motorsport, but Homebush, with its absence of facilities, strikes me as just plain wrong.

Then again, it's V8s. Slow, boring .....

:)

Slow & boring?

Pfft. 300kmph down conrod. Even the great Senna was amazed at their speed.

I'll be there. Be nice to finally meet some of you strange folk.

:)

One of the great features of the V8's is that you can actually see some movement of the car going throught the corner. The F1 is so quick through the corner you miss it.

What's the shortest lens you need for this sort of work? [I realise you may need pretty fast AF as well]

Depends how close you stand to the track :P

I would day the 70-200 is good for spectators. Shortest I'll use is 10-20, but i'll be accredited, so a bit closer in spots.

A long lens, maybe 400mm will likely give you different angles if you look for them.

No.

They're just V8s.

Raskill wrote:300kmph down conrod.

But they need 75% of Conrod's length to be able to attain that speed, and then the rest of it for braking! :)

An F1 car will hit close to that speed well before turn 1 at the Mount, and still be able to slow down in time to be able to actually negotiate the corner.

Watching the start of a V8 race is more like watching synchronised drowning, such are the dynamics achieved. :)

is there any limitation on what sort of lens you can bring with you ? some sporting events are limited to 200mm or something.

No limitation on lenses.

There is however a limitation on the use of their images. As part of the terms and conditions of attending, you agree not to use the images for commercial gain (apparently) without their permission. Their permission costs money, either an upfront payment or percentage of sales.

You can make sales for editorial use only.

It also is concerned with the copyrights of logos etc. V8SC own the intellectual copyrights to your images (apparently), but you own the physical copyrights.

As to how this is enforced, I do not know, but I know the scour ebay and the net for people selling V8 images from time to time.

Had a bike ride around the circuit today to scope it out for next weekend,to me it didnt look very good for photography unless you like looking through 3m high fences.Obviosuly there are no 'natural' vantage points like the hills surrounding Bathurst,Eastern Creek or the armchair luxury of Oran Park. OK i hear you say well it is a street race, fair call.Location just doesnt seem a great choice for motorsport fans but I guess that is not the reason why its there.
Not only are there high fences ,some areas have what looks like a 2m exclusion zone before the fence ,so no chance of getting the lens up against the fence (in some spots). Most of the corners have grandstands so not sure what the access will be like for those on foot to get shots of approaching cars.
I guess the challenge is to see what 'opportunities' there are for good photos,no doubt the forum members will overcome this and I look forward to seeing some shots!! Those without media access that is!!!!

yeah i've seen some images aswell. its looking a bit ordinary. i suppose expected on a street circuit. am hoping the long focal length and large aperture of the 300/2.8 does the trick. we'll soon see.

Rooz, I'll be there from about 7.30am Sunday if you want to catch up. Not sure how long I will stay tho. Will depend on how many locations there are for photo opportunities. I also have a paddock pass, so can have a look in the pits as well. PM me if you are interested.

Hey Alan, maybe you can let the forum know what opportunities/locations there are outside the fence after you visit. Will you be there Saturday as well as Sunday?

good luck tomorrow guys. went out today with a couple of mates and enjoyed ourselves. but for photography its pretty damn challenging to say the least. vantage points are fairly limited. with a 300/2.8 i could get rid of fence issue in around 80% of shots. with a 1.4tc attached, (420/4), i really struggled with that wire fence. a mate with a 100-400L was having kittens lol the cars get so damn close to the thing its hard to find places where you can get good distance between the car and fence. i didn't find a single place to try any sort of effective panning either, again cos of that damn fence ! i suppose the pros must be able to get much better vantage points.

that being said, i had fun and got a bunch of boring car shots !! lol

You guys are just going to love the fences..... NOT

All the good locations in the action areas are ruined by fences
