D70 Challenge: Questions

I'm thinking of using my site for a D70 challenge thingy... Mabie once a week or fortnight
Format will be something like this:
Winner of previous challenge gets to pick next theme/conditions
All photos will be publicly viewable until voting takes place
During voting (which will take place over 1-2 days) the Album wil only be viewable by D70 members (and hence only they will be able to vote
Only D70 members can submit entries, and only one entry
so....
When should we start?
Do you want to wait until D70 a day finishes?
Should I get the current leader of the d70aday challenge to decide first theme?
Is this a good idea? Are you happy with the format, voting scheme of my site?

Sounds like a great idea
Giving us a couple of weeks to come up with a suitable pic makes it far more achievable too!

Yes... that would be the idea... A cycle like this
Day 0: Subject anounced, photo valid from this date
Day 2: Album set up, enties open
Day 10: entties close voting commences
Day 12: Voting closes, winner anounced
Day 14: Subject anounced, photo valid from this date

Can we award a prize to the popular voted photo? if yes,
I'll contribute a prize for the challenge:
- 1.0Gb CF card (Transcend 45x) Prize for photo got the popular vote.
Including shipping to NSW country and interstate or overseas members.
Local Sydney members will collect the prize at one of the nearest meet of the D70User

This sounds great!!!!
I’m In
Yet again Birdy, your support for this community is overwhelming
Thanks mate
Nothing like a bit of incentive to get one motivated
MHD; we mite as well kick it off as soon as possible if everyone feels the same about the challenge.
I think you should set the first one’s theme
Cheers

That sounds like a great idea - I must admit the photo a day challenge beat me, ran out of steam, yada yada, but this appeals greatly.
Well done MHD. (The two week timeframe sounds good)
Birdy - again with the generosity.

Some rules:
*Images must have been taken using a D70 Body
*Submitted images must have at lest a minimal set of EXIF tags attached that show information critical to eligability (date, camera etc...)
* Images posted to the Challange site must conform to the theme and/or rules of the specific challenge
*Images must be TAKEN during the challenge time frame
*The format for the comp will be JPEG with the longest dimension no greater than 1000 pixels
* Unless allowed as part of the specific challenge images may not be edited. Post processing is allowed. Allowed actions include: Levels, unsharp mask, cropping, framing, resizing (to the entry size), white ballance, RAW channel mixing (for RAW to Jpeg conversion), cloning for the purposes of removing dust spots or hotpixels, hue sat adjustments including conversion to black and white.
* Only users who are members of D70users.com and who have more than 5 posts may contribute.
* The theme for the next comp will be decided by the winner of the previous one. He/she has two days to come up with a theme or a "random one" will be decided
*Users may submit one image and may not change thier submission after it has been submitted
*A challenge will run for two weeks.
Day 1: Theme announced, images valid from here
Day 2-3: Gallery set up, submissions open
Day 10: submission closed, Gallery removed from public view, members only are able to view
Day 12: Voting closed, gallery goes public again, winner announced.
Day: 14: New theme decided...
Now the timing between challanges will depend on how busy I am and of course there may be variations on the timings there if things come up in my "real" life but that is the general Jist

I will be part of this for sure...
I must admit my challenge a day idea has been pretty hard to do (I missed my first day the other day). It has been fun though.
MHD if you need an extra set of hands for this let me know... Not sure what I can help with though

This sounds like a fantastic idea. One of the hardest things i find is to motivate myself to take photos.
Nothing like a bit of competition to get me out there taking pics.
I only found this forum a week ago having lurked on dpreview for a month after buying my d70.
Fantastic to see such a good community in Australia

Thank you for the idea MHD and for your support Birddog.
BTW I think the next milestone will be a thousand posts and Birddog would have to be in the running for that.

I'm trying to do my best to support this community.
If this challenge goes well as we wish then I'll discuss with the founder and members of great three prizes for the first three contest photos in the other challenge which we may have in November for the result to be announce by mid-December this year, just about Xmas time.

Just a thought which I am more than happy to do.
Since Birddog has offered to supply a prize for the challenge would everyone be willing to pay, say $5 - $10 to participate.
I know Birddog loves to help out in the community but I personaly would be happier knowing he is not out of pocket at all (I know it isn't much, but still it is something).
Anyway how does everyone feel about that? If the challenges are succesful and we run one a month I am happy to chip in for prizes. Especially if we find that the comments left for other users is helping us to improve our photography.

Woody,
It's quite hard for someone to post a cheque for 5 or ten bucks, if people does not have cheque book then there's more problems, then again we need to appoint a treasurer and account all the spending, it's complicated.
I think we just leave the freedom as this forum had and anyone can contribute to the challenge/ contest if they can afford, encourage members to participate with all their skills of photography.

This is a great idea. I would love to participate! Nothing like some competition to sharpen the skills. Does anyone have any ideas for the theme?

I have several themes which should be avoided, if I might be so bold...
1. The grandeur of the Sydney Harbour Bridge
2. The
Opera house
3. The harbour from Rose Bay
4. Surfers at Manly
5. Floaters at Bondi
(Addendum - I just looked at Bruno's "4 newish shots" - and I want to stress that I had not seen them before I made the above post. Bruno - I love your Manly panorama - actually, even that sounds a bit dodgy!)

Greg, i love that manly sense of humour you have.
I think we need a topic that everyone can contribute to so rather than be too specific we could broaden a single topic by rearranging a few words together, such as;
1. Great moments in Architecture. (Brings the artist out in everyone)
2. The splendour of water.
3. Life's a beach. (Get manly with this one)
4. The majesty of history.
5. The beauty of nature/animals.
6. This is my idea of Australia. (For the patriots)
7. Life at it's best.
8. Patterns, contours and colours. (Could be abstracts)
9. Technology rules. (I was thinking of traffic lights)
10. What on Earth is that? (Another go at abstract)
11. Basic elements. (Good opportunity for some minimalism)
12. Taxpayer funded.
13. Man and machinery.
14. The working day.
15. Interesting designs.
Just a few ideas.

Hey guys!
Try not to make it too Sydney-centric please!

Marvin,
I believe you'll have a very nice photo to post for the challenge, cos your surrounding area has lot of opportunity.
Of course, I also don't think all our members will take Sydney as the major point. Photography is an creative arts and everyone all has their talent and skill.

Hi all,
Been out of action for a long time - but this sounds like a sensational idea - much thanks to MDH and Birddog.
I'd love to participate.

No worries...
Oh one last thing, you can vote for your own image, to make it even I suggest everyone give thier image the excelent vote (consider it as bonus points)
