G'day guys,

I'm thinking of buying but before doind so, I want to rent a fast 50mm lens to try it out. I would prefer the 1.4 but the 1.8 would be okay. Any ideas where to try?

I went to Camera Houseand they gave me 3 different lense types to put onto my D70s, so my advice is waltz in with your camera and see if they will let you test one in store! Other than that I have no idea!!!

Give Plaza Digital a call. They prob wont help you BUT they gave me the number of a place that rents all manner of gear, I just rented a second SB800 for a wedding shoot. Failing that I have the 50mm 1.8 if you wanted a look (but seriously, for the price, just buy this lense...its awesome.)

No need to hire or test drive the 50mm F1.8/1.4 as Escapism said, you won't be disappointed, the 1.8 is the best value for $ lense around, especially if purchased from our esteemed patron

Ahh, Saul at Camera Electronics in Stirling St - one of my favourite stores for all sorts of bibs n bobs. Sadly they don't have a F1.8 lens to rent so I've just ordered one from them to buy. You're right the lens is quite cheap and the cost of renting one if I could find one, seems silly. BTW, the Camera Electronics website is http://www.cameraelectronic.com.au/index.html and they rent out all the 2nd hand stuff they have in stock. I recently rented a flash from them.
Anyway, I'm now back at work so I have less time to do things but shiould be able to satisfy some *lens lust*

how'd you go with the 50mm? I recently picked up one in HK and agree with the rest of the comments - great lens for the price! I found that it's a great lens for candid portraits. I've started using the 50mm 1.8 with extension tubes for some close ups but on a steep learning curve as the depth of field is a challenge.

May I enquire what the pricing was like for the 50mm from Camera Electronic? I've used their services before but not bought any lenses off them.

I agree with the other guys, just go ahead and buy the 1.8mm lens.
The 1.4 slightly faster but as was suggested DOF at 1.4 and slightly above a challenge to use. The 1.8 is very small and light.
ECS in Sydney have for $195 and perhaps try Discount DIgital in Sydney.
If $215 in Perth, go for it. Freight will put th Sydney price past that.

I would agree with you, but sometimes money don't play a role
the lens must be competible to its user and not the other way around
in the end, just the photographer can chppse his shoot
