Warren,
have a great time. I just had a week in the Flinders and Gammon, June 10-16, wonderful place, great walks. I'm still processing my photos. Hi Warren,
Have a great time. It will be bloody cold at night!! Here is a link to a similar question I asked about firelight portraits a while ago. http://www.dslrusers.net/viewtopic.php?t=21591&highlight= Cheers, Lee Nikon D7000
Have fun, I was up there a few weeks ago (southern end around Wilpena Pound though) and decided I'll only ever go again in Winter. The lack of flies during the day is beautiful.
Rug up if you want to do any long exposures at night though, because it gets bloody cold! Photo gallery online <a href="http://photoden.net/oliver">here</a> and some more on deviantArt <a href="http://oliau.deviantart.com">here</a>.
slow speed makes it pretty hard to get everyone blur free and if you use flash you lose the colour of the fire.
Trying to get everyone to sit completely still for 15 seconds is a nightmare but you can have a lot of fun with it http://www.dslrusers.net/viewtopic.php?t=19767 and the direct link to it http://www.dslrusers.com/viewtopic.php? ... sc&start=0 Shane

Definitely go the slow shutter speed/ tripod/ remote release. Even the Embers/sparks from the Fireplace make for some great photos
