The plan is to be opposite the Convention Centre, Memorial Drive side at 6pm. Sunset is a few minutes after 6pm.

As this stage Big V is going, myself and any others most welcome.

Ok - I've missed something here. I thought that this meet was planned for the 16th. Was the date changed so that Big V could make it??

Yes it was changed so Big V could make it seeing it was his idea.

I am willing to go over the same ground Friday week, if you and other registered users/members can not make it this Friday

Great. The 9th is better than the 16th for me anyway. Count me in for the 9th!

I'm a little unsure about the meeting point. Is it on the Southern or Northern side of the Torrens?

Opposite the convention centre would be the northern side. I'll be there also.

On the northern side (Adelaide Oval) but directly opposite Convention Centre. This is my understanding. Come in Big V if I am incorrect. Suggest that everyone who is interested in this meet marks this post to keep up with the latest information.

I'm in Adelaide this weekend too, but it's a pity i have other arrangements for Friday night or i would join you all.

Yes, the northern side of the river is where we will meet. You should be able to find parking there as well. Looking forward to it...

The balance of my shots are suitable for the rubbish bin

Ok fozzie looks ok maybe could have been just on dark a bit more, but looks ok, I took these shots just on dark when i was up there.


Oh well mate you can try again if you are not happy with them, maybe when the sky is nice and clear.

Pretty much all of mine ended up there, but since getting home I have recomposed most of them in my mind and thought about how I will do things differently next time.
Once the weather sorts itself out I think I will go back and have another crack at some of these shots.
Also, it was great to be able to put faces to names. Looking forward to next time. In the mean time, I'd love to see a few more of your pics from this nights meet.

Your'e welcome Dave, it has gone quiet at the moment maybe eye of the storm so you might get it over nite sometime but yeh you can expect it, and going to be like it all weekend which is a bummer.

Where else did you end up going?

I wasn't to keen tonight, being tired and having shot around the festival centre about a week ago made me want to go home.
I'll stick around longer next time.

Fozzie that isn't too bad a shot, and oli yours is ok as well. Maybe another nite will be better for good results.

I notice that the second one was taken in Shutter Priority mode. Just wondering if you could explain why. Its not something I would have considered doing, but as I am a learner I'm interested to know about these sorts of things.

Thanks. I have a 10s version of #2, but I think I like the texture in the water more than complete blur.

I am just as much a learner. I have a (bad) habbit of letting the camera work out exposure itself.
I started using A mode which worked fine, but there were times the D70 said Lo instead of telling me what shutter speed it was going to use. So I changed to S mode so I could choose the shutter speed. Only when the camera isn't doing what I want do I switch to manual.

I actually prefer the first one Fozzie. I like the darker colours.

I've been thinking about this for a while, but I keep coming back to the second one. I find the first one a bit too dark and for me, the third one is too light. The middle one is just right!

Well....this is the best I can contribute!
Each were taken with the Nikon18-70 kit lens over 25 seconds. These were very much experimental shots as I have not done much of this sort of photography before. I have learnt from this exercise and will go back to try to capture these again. I realise that sharpness is lacking, due in part to my crappy tripod that was affected by the wind.

Colour


Did not like the colour of the sky, so out with the colour..

I think that this one gets a 3d look to it due to the sky and the bending of the light rays by the moving water

fozzie, I like the first one best. The others look a little to 'unnatural' for some reason.

Daniel, great pano crop. Perhaps moving slightly further to the left so that there was a bit of a gap between the convention centre and the rotunda would help.

meerkat: I really like the idea behind your second shot - I'd go for a tighter crop though, there's too much nothing in the top right of the image in my view.

Thanks. Yes I noticed that afterwards. I thought I had found the right spot, but it seems I missed by a couple of feet.

Looks like we all got some good shots.

Fozzie, with your last B&W shot, I'd try and darken the sky and maybe lighten the grass. I find the sky a bit too bright.

Yep I agree, needs more contrast.

With people doing B&W I'll have to do one too...

Looks like everyone had fun and grabbed some good shots.

Fozzie: Number One looked the best, colours looked more natural for the available light. I liked the crop of just the convention centre, not so busy. The other two lacked contrast and didn't appear balanced.

Oli: Whoa ! What happened ? The sky is more blue than a smurf ?

DanielA: The second shot is a ripper ! Colour looks great and the highlights are not blown. Has a very natural look and a great dark mood to the image. Agree with the others about the crop and camera placement just another 2 feet I also liked the 4th image, was there any colour change or gradient applied to the sky ? That's a fascinating colour.

BigV: The 1st image was interesting, I liked the soft appearance of the lights over the water. The foyer lights from the Convention Centre tend to distract you to the right side of the image doesn't help that the left is quite dark too. Your second post I thought was much nicer, you kept the same 'soft' mood with the water and there are no bright lights to distract the viewer, I liked this one the best.

Oh well I'm seriously jealous, would have loved to have joined the troop but had domestic duties that particular friday. Hope to make to the next one if not will meet the people heading to gluepot.

Yeah my post processing saturates the colours a bit. I like that look on landscape and whatever-scape photos in general.. The 'original' raw capture has a darker blue sky.

Smurfs are cool anyway!
