got my first parking fine today $110.00 !!!!!!!

Postby huw62 on Wed Nov 14, 2007 7:49 pm

Hi all, not very happy although it was my fault as i overstayed past 4.00 pm in a 2 hour parking zone and it became a no standing area after 4.00pm and got fined at 4.18PM!!! they are quick aren't they?
We had travelled up to Melbourne from Geelong (1.15hrs) to do some christmas shopping while my wife and i were both on days off and that's what happens!
Oh well i will have to be more careful next time.
Just my little rant thanks for reading.

Huw, be thankful you don't live in the taxing state, NSW, we have a heap of $397 and $477 parking fines.

I think that, at 18 minutes over, that's a fair cop. Five minutes over allows for differences in timepieces, etc, anything over ten minutes is probably not unreasonable.

I hope that I'm not sounding too unsympathetic, but there has to be some point at which a cutoff applies. While I don't profess to know what that cutoff point should be, I tend to think that 18 minutes would be well beyond a point of reasonableness.

In Bondi, we have the local council rangers who will snap you (with a PHD cam) for stopping in a no stopping zone, or parking your vehicle over a marker line, and they will pop your fine to you in the mail several weeks later.

My one and only parking fine in Sydney was for $35 dollars :) That was in 1991.

$110 is not that bad really. It could have been much worse.

You are lucky that you were not too much later. It's not uncommon to see tow trucks down Latrobe St on my walk to the train, anywhere from 4:30ish in the afternoon. The parking spots become clearways and the tow trucks make sure they are clear ways ...

You have to be ticketed before they tow. You should see them lining up at the start on Spencer St at 4pm. They walk along ticketing and the towies follow along towing.

I got done at 4:05pm one day there, a few years back so the fines may have gone up. $110 for the ticket and $145 I think for getting the car back from the impound!

I once had a ticket for being stopped in a rather dubious no standing space (sign hidden by trees and they had extended the gutter so you were within the normal 10 metres of the curb, but not from where the sign was placed from the original curbing) in a whopping 28 seconds. I was pretty miffed at that one. But at least it was only $40 then, $110 seems a bit on the nose.
