OK, I know I am just reinforcing the prejudices of those who don't live in Melbourne, but as we start my second weekend of D200 ownership, I can't help but note that the weather is shite. Yeah, there are other photog options that the great outdoors, I know that, just wanted to whinge.
That's all.

Surely Greg, this represents a great opportunity to get out and find some lovely reflective puddles or the grim faces on those that have to jump over them, each of which would make for a great series?

I always thought the song "4 Seasons In One Day" was written about Melbourne...

Greg shift to Cairns, I think we could find some room for you
. Weather is perfect here. Though for a Melbournian blue skies and sun might be a strange experience
cheers

Greg, you are not alone here as i think you get most of our weather and here in MT Gambier is wet today as usual, well we only just over 4 hours away from Melbourne. So i will be staying inside out of it as i am not allowed to get a cold before my surgery next week or they will cancel.
Not that there is a lot on here anyhow, but still i get withdrawels if i dont get out to take some piccies.

Not too happy about the weather either but it is good for macro photos. I went out with the D200 and gave it a test run on some orchids/flowers.

Greg,
She got it from last Monday, a week after you got yours.

And after today (The mini meet), there are another 5 will get it next week.
So the D200 invaded the D70 territory

Yep it was torture. Got it last Monday and haven't been able to use it properly until today. Hopefully have something to show later tonight.

Yes it's miserable alright, went out this morning in the vein hope of the sun breaking through the cloud,
spent ten minutes outside the car and promptly jumped right back in and went home.
Silly bugger me, even left the long john's sittings beside the heater,
at least the long john's had some sense.

An accurate and succinct report there Stephen. The sky is an 18% grey card, contrast is low ("flat as a shit carter's hat" I believe is the technical term).

Have to disagree. It's been shootable outdoors all weekend.
But it's cold and windy, have to agree on the comfort factor.

I take it I'm the only one who had a somewhat productive weekend then regardless of the freezing conditions

Cloudy overcast days are perfect for waterfall stuff, foresty stuff... If only I could go out and play instead of going to work... sigh...

I couldn't agree with you more!
My pet hate is high contrasty situations when trying to photograph bush/forest or even beach scenes half of which is in shade. It takes a lot of patience and PPing afterwards.
Congratulations on your 2 new additions, Nicole!

Congrats Nicole on finally getting the D200.....enjoy!
In regards to the weather, if it's not wet I usually found that winter time in Melbourne produced some of the best sunrises/sunsets that I've seen. Plus you have the lovely cold mornings coupled with Sun which produces some lovely low level mist hugging the landscapes.

Well, all of you who embrace the grey dull overcast with rain as a photographic opportunity will be overjoyed yet again following 15/16 July. There should be shots of waterfalls and sunsets abounding. Apparently.
However, for those of us who might enjoy a poofteenth of contrast, a bagatelle of light, a scintilla of warmth to illuminate our images, not so good.

it's just the wind up here that's bugging me, wanted to do some long exposures tonight but even with such a heavy tripod, I'm going to need to get some sandbags to keep the bastard still.

bad weather is good for two things
at night wet streets beautiful reflections and interesting clouds that long exposure can capture very well
2. diffused lighting for portraits
apart ftom that overcast and rainy days are boring
but Melbourne isn't i'm sure you can find something to shoot
