Melbourne Meet :- Melbourne to Osaka Concert and Fireworks

Postby rflower on Tue Feb 27, 2007 10:28 pm

Hi all,

"The Melbourne Osaka Cup Double Handed Yacht Race 2007 is a 5,500 nautical miles epic journey that runs every four years, pitting man and boat against the power of the ocean."

Melbourne is the start of a Yacht race to Osaka Japan. On the night before the yachts leave, they are organising a concert and fireworks at Docklands in Melbourne

It might be a chance to get together, take photos around docklands and finish with the fireworks. Say around 6-7pm. Fireworks start around 10 I think.

I am looking to see if anyone is interested in a meet.

Details below ...

http://www.osakacup.com/home.html

Saturday 24th March 2007
Melbourne Osaka Farewell Concert and Fireworks

Waterfront City will come alive on Saturday night with City of Melbourne hosting a farewell concert and Fireworks display. Casual berthing will be able for boats. Further details will be available shortly.

I am led to believe that Killing Heidi will be the concert performers.

Thanks

Russell

Melbourne Meet :- Melbourne to Osaka Concert and Fireworks

Postby rflower on Fri Mar 09, 2007 2:13 pm

!~DeViNe~DaRkNeSs~! wrote:maybe...isnt avalon airshow on that weekend tho?

Yes it is the Airshow that weekend. According to the airshow website, the gates close at 6pm on Saturday. Not sure if there is a night show on that night or not ...

The program has been updated on the Melbourne - Osaka website linked above

Competitor interviews - 5pm -6:30pm
Killing Heidi - Acoustic session - 7-8pm,
Ceremonial Sunset (HMAS Melbourne) - 8-8:30pm,
Joe Camilleri & The Black Sorrows - 8:30-10pm
Fireworks - 10pm

I propose that we we meet at 7:00pm at the cow in the tree, on Harbour Esplanade (1. on the map below)

Last time I went and took fireworks photos at docklands (Volvo round the world Challenge), I parked in the free carpark at the end of Bourke St (2.) and had a pretty good vantage spot for the fireworks.

The Concert will be at waterfront city (I would expect) which is on the other side of the water (3.). If it is the same as last time, the fireworks will be launched from barges somewhere near (4.)

I am open to other suggestions though ...

The other week I was in that area, for the Moomba wakeboarding.

I found a great location under the Bolte Bridge (access via the end of Docklands Drive), where we can get abstract shots underneather the bridge. Then, when the fire works kick off, we can get the fire works with a CBD backdrop!!!

just a thought.

I have been to that same point under the Bolte Bridge ... taking abstract shots under the bridge :) ...

We can still meet at the cow in the tree, and then wander ( or drive) around to the various things worthy of photographing in the vicinity ... arty sculptures, abstract bridges, city shots, the free concert etc - whatever is the feel from them that are there, finishing with fireworks.

I am bringing a mate. Who knows he might even join the forum when he can get the internet on at his new house.

Send me a PM if you want my mobile number.

I was there last night and took photos of Ella Hooper and Jess performing as well as the sunset ceremony. I walked past a few guys who were standing by the shore near the cow in the tree. Was that anyone?

Will post pics soon.

We left the cow in tree just after quarter past 7. We didn't actually get around to the concert side of the wharf. We went around to the Burke St / Nth Wharf Rd side, and hung around near the warehouses there. There was a limo driver (with his limo) just killing time, waiting for his clients to be ready to go home. Net result was we had something to photograph, and he is going to get a stack of photos of his limo (thanks mostly to methd  )

Yep the wind came in, and it was quite chilly. The fireworks got cancelled
, but it was good to meet the guys who came. I look forward to catching up with you all again soon.
