Tourist in Melbourne - where's good to shoot?

Hey guys,

I'm off to Melbourne this coming weekend and will have a whole day to spend walking around with my camera whilst my girlfriend is in meetings.
So what I need to know is where the good places to go are.

What's a must see?
Where are the best views?

Will you be around Melb CBD during the weekend ? Because unlike SYD, many of Melbourne's tourist spots are 50-100 ks from Mel. Of course there are a few spots in city, especially at south end, along yarra river.

Well, I'll be in CBD on Monday only really. I wont have the use of a car and wont really be able to get out of the city. So it's going to be cityscapes and perhaps the zoo or something like that I guess.

Are there any great skyline shots to be had. I'm sure there are - it's just a question of walking around and trying to find them.

Yes. Zoo is pretty close -- 20 min tram ride. (yo can shoot a tram too you dont have them up there .

For the cityscapres as I said from the southbank side. Also on cnr of collins st and king st, you can go on top of Rialto Tower (something like the SYD centrepoint) and if its a fine day you can do good justice to your zooms.

Some would say at least 300-400 klms from Melbourne

I would suggest a leisurely walk over the bridge to StKilda road and down along the road towrds the War Memorial and then back via the botanical gardens and Capt Cooks Cottage (did you know he was a Yorkshireman?) then perhaps a stroll along the Yarra.

That should give you some views of the city and some really well manicured parks and gardens that Melbourne is famous for.

If you have time then head to the North of the city and have a look at the old exhibition buildings and maybe even get a tram to the zoo.

If you still have time then perhaps a tram to St Kilda to have a look at that area. There's plenty of traditional Melbourne sights down there. In fact, i reckon that if you want to capture the 'essence' of Melbourne then St Kilda would be it. It's got Luna park, those brightly coloured beach-huts, a big pier, pubs, resturants etc.....

Maybe you'll need two or three days

My GF has meetings on Monday and Tuesday morning so I effectively have 1 and a half days of touristy things to do.

And some would say 800-1000 kms from Melbourne (In Sydney )

Back to the point, I like Ballarat - It's bit far from Mel but worth to visit IMHO
