EOI: Melbourne Workshop - Photoshop+

Calling for expressions of interest for a Melbourne Workshop – Photoshop and a Shoot?
On my search for Melbourne based Photoshop Courses, Matt K. kindly suggested the possibility of him presenting some of the key elements of Photoshop, triggering the idea of a workshop in Melbourne.
I’d like to try to find out if we have interest in this kind of event.
Also, interested if members would like to complement the Photoshop session, with a shoot (studio, or outdoor, beachside, portraiture, landscape, or others). Maybe we break the day in two, or run this over two days, say a Saturday afternoon, and a Sunday morning? Each session of around 3-4 hours is probably effective. I’m thinking setup so you can bring a laptop to follow along the tuition (but not essential, as we will have a projector).
A workshop like this will have a monetary cost, as we may need to recover travel costs, equipment rentals (projector, PC, tables and chairs). Initial estimate is around $100 each (assuming 15 members). This estimate includes a light lunch.
How about Feb 10-11 (subject to availability)?
For now, need to collect your interest in this event.
Perhaps for those interested to attend, if you could comment on the following headings;
Preferred Date(s):
Preferred Format: (1 half day, 1 full day, 2 half days)
Preferred Topics: (which elements of Photoshop would you like to cover, and other areas of photography?)
Thanks, and I look forward to your feedback.
Kind Regards,
Oz_Beachside

I'd be interested in travelling down from sydney for this for sure
But, that timeframe may be a little too close to now though, if it were at the end of feb, i'd probably be alright

i am highly interested, although i sold my laptop a few months ago...dam!
closer to the time (a week) i will know if i am working that weekend...also Evanesence concert on sunday night,,,,dont think that should interfere tho
I love the idea of a shoot afterwards
i was thinking of trying to meet a few of u melb ppl on a weekend soonish for a meet/coffee/shoot sort of thing....this might be the perfect situation!
3-4hours seems alittle intense, but im thinking this will not really be a classroom situation, more of a social demonstration am i right? if so i think its an AWSUM idea!
Have u got any details of location etc? im sure someone has a projector and seats etc that can help keep the costs down, of course we want to treat Matt.K to a great weekend and not harm him too much in our information extraction excercise
OK maybe i should answer ur main Q's
DATE ....is great with me as i so far will have that
w/e off
FORMAT i say 2-3hours then a lunchy break for an hour then maybe 2hours after then go shoot stuff and "play" hehe...say 10am-12, 1hr lunch then 1-2:30 then shoot etc.
TOPICS i'd love to get a basic demo of raw processing, changing backgrounds/mergeing, after that im open to learn it all
I think this is a great idea...sorry for the long post! (hope im helping sumwhat??)

thanks, your feedback is ideal. Dont worry, a laptop is not needed, you can learn by watching, and taking notes too. Oz

Hi Oz, I am very interested. For me dates are relatively open. that is, can make it no matter when.
Suggest one day is ok, maybe a little shooting, then some photoshop, maybe using images from the initial shoot, then maybe follow up with some late afternoon shooting when that light changes. Long sessions on photoshop can become a bit tiring because you try to take so much in.
I'm ready for using masks and editing in layers.

I attended one of Matt's photoshop sessions in Sydney a while back, and without question I learned a huge amount. Some of it, I even retained. It would be a great idea to video the session.
I am interested in attending.

It will be somewhat intense, and, I would expect, somewhat in a classroom or lecture style of situation. That said, my understanding is it will still be a very social event with lots of opportunity to meet with other members and discuss lots of photographic stuff with them before and after the actual workshop.
There is lots of stuff to learn, and there are few who are better qualified than Matt to deliver this information to you.
Please note carfully Oz's comments about the cost for this: we will need to bring Matt from Sydney for you, and his expenses will need to be financed by those who wish to attend.

Agree with capturing on video (a techie friend said we could even capture on PC (but might need a grunter)).

Bruce,
While I'm not a Melbourner, if you do find someone who can capture it for you, I can teach them probably over the web how to do it.

I have a decent video camera that uses tape. You can always dump it onto computer later.
BTW, not 3 Feb for me, otherwise any dates.

Greg, you'd probably want to use a two-prong system where a camera records the people and any questions they may have and use something like Camtasia as output.

Yep, I'd be keen for such a sesh.
Would also like to keep it to a day, but don't mind if it's a long day. At this stage either day would be fine with me.
Perhaps a little out of the scope, but it would be great to go through an entire workflow, from capture to (virtual)print.

If someone had a half decent printer to bring along then that could be arranged.

If a printer was needed on the day, I have an Epson R800 which I could bring along if needed. The drivers for the printer would of course come also.

So far we have 8 Expressions of Interest (EOIs).
To keep our costs down each, would be great to get a few more, any others interested?
It would be great if we can finalise numbers by Friday 20 Jan, so we can lock in dates and get this show rolling.
Ask your DSLRUser friends

We're getting up to the maximum comfortable number about now. If the group gets any larger then it becomes a 'presentation' rather than a group learning session.

Location is sorted, StKilda, Melbourne.
We have arranged for some studio lighting, a PC, projector, and tables and chairs.
Still awaiting details to finalise costs.

forward of me I know, but just wondering if anyone coming to the workshop has a nikon teleconverter, I just wanted to check one out.
Perhaps the Nikon x1.7 TC II (or 1.4, or 2.0). Think compatible with a 70-200VR, or 85/1.4.
Wanted to fire off a few, to see the impact on f-stop, focus speed, etc.

Based on the fact that the 10th seems to be good for everyone, please remove me from the list.
Simply wont have the resources to drive down from syd by then
Which is a shame, because i'd love to come down and meet some of you guys.
Matt, will have to organise one in sydney some time..

Hey Oz, do we have room for one more. My wife, Margaret is now very interested in doing the day as well.
I have swapped emails with Matt re the starting level of the workshop and Marg is now confident that she will be able to understand what is going on.

Is there a potentional for others to come and meet when you are going out to to take photos?
