Syllabus
Here is the proposed syllabus (subject to change without notice)

Wendellt wrote:outline as follows:
Basic Studio setup with 1 key light for portrait and full length
Light Modifiers
- Softbox
- Beauty Dish
- Scrim softbox
- Light constraining with light modifiers: snoot, Grid, Barndoors
- Light Distance to subject angles and light falloff
- Position and angle of lights to create certain flattering shadows on the face
- Controlling the light for certain effects using high flash burst opposed to low powered burst

2 Light setup
- Use of a 2nd light
- Using modifiers to create hair light, rim lighting, backlight flare
- Using 2nd key light to create chisel effect
- Background effect
- Balanced lighting
- Using lighting ratios to create uneven light for mood)
- Using the scrim for subtle fill flash

Constraining Light
- Stripbox softbox
- Light modifiers and techniques

Using the ringflash which is pretty basic
this section also simplifies the whole studio process, there are some complex studio setups to re-create omnidirectional light wrap but the ring flash simplifies this

Getting the best out of your model
This section will be in 2 parts 1st part is working with everyday people and the 2nd is with talent
- Initial interaction with subject
- Getting to know the subject talking to them
- Making the connection
- communicating your ideas to the model
- Direction
- Rollplaying
- Understanding when direction is needed
- Empowering your subject to get the best out of them
- Finding the quintessential aspect of their personality and using it
- Balance between direction from the photographer and models own ability to freestyle
- The incidental moment
- Development during the shoot, photographer and model feedback
and how to use this to make the a good picture better
- How to pick talent things to look for.

Finally, any further discussions about options for tethered shooting welcome.

From memory, sun studios have a pretty large carpark, failing that it is in the light industrial zone so street parking will be fine.

I can confirm that I will be attending.

Are their any suggestion on what we should bring? I.e. pen and paper to take some notes seems like a good idea and maybe a camera for capturing the setups?

I have access to a (oldish) projector (so will bring it along in case there is a way of using it)

Can I confirm that Rodney will be bringing his Macbook with Lightroom?

We need to make sure we have a cable from D3 to Macbook for possible tethering.

Hey Steve,

You should definitely bring your camera (and notebook if you wish). You may get a chance to take a few shots.

It will be upto Wendell's discretion whether you can take snaps while he is teaching. I would assume that continuous video recording (or audio) will be a no-no.

I will, I'll bring my 6M USB cable from D3 to macbook.

I'll also have my video output adapters (to Analog VGA and DVI) and I'll bring my new Spyder 3 Elite calibrator I bought last week.

This means if we have access to a larger monitor we can both plug into it and calibrate if required.

On a side note - I'm not sure but folks may already have monitor calibrators - I meant to mention it on the weekend and offer - however if you don't I'm more than happy for you to use my Spyder 3. I got the Elite version which supports calibrating multiple connected displays, newer LED display as well as projectors.

Could everyone PM me your mobile numbers? I will share this info with Gerry so that we can make last minute adjustments (if required) without having to PM people.

Ok, original thread updated - we are all looking good for Sunday morning

We will have a break for morning tea and then lunch, there is not much at the studio or nearby in terms of food, however for lunch I was going to suggest we pile into the cars and drive up to the southern end of Newtown for lunch, there are craploads of cafes and restaurants there and its only a 5 minute drive, thoughts? I will organise to bring some snacks and nibblies for the morning tea and I could probably do a coffee run in the break if people are desperate for their caffiene injection.

We will probably wind up around the 4pm mark - thats a pretty big day, for everyone, can we get some idea if anyone is keen for a bevvie afterwards or dinner?

Anyone else have anything to add, forgotten anything?

Can anyone get hold of one of those eye-fi cards?

Gerry,

While it's only five minutes away, I'd suggestion a little caution in that approach: that's 5 minutes each way, plus you need to find parking, get seated, order, and then served. Then eat, pay, etc ... I reckon it might take something like 45 to 90 minutes out of the day's time and end up beign somewhat disruptive.

Might I suggest pizza?

Cracking stuff

it was great to see everyone today! and I for one had one very educational day, from the initial single light setup right through to the PP session there was alot of good information and great examples of how to implement various looks/lighting etc.

Additionally, for me, the exposure to the equipment and also just being able to watch someone who knows what they are doing was invaluable.

The tethered setup (thanks to Rodney for teh lappie and cord) worked beautifully (after a few teething problems) and made things a sh$t load easier to understand and view, this is a bare minimum from now on for this kinda stuff.

Wendell, thanks for your time, it was a long day and I am sure I speak for everyone here in saying thanks for taking time out your busy schedule to do this, especially given you have a full day of work tomorrow and a flight out of the country early on tuesday.

A couple of pictures of Wendell in action. Rodney, could you please post up the groupie shot that would be excellent.

I also want to see surens and colins avatar changed to the appropriate test images of them :rotfl2:

It was a great day!

Thanks to Gerry for great organising and rounding up the troops and making it all happen!

I learnt heaps from the master himself. Thanks Wendell for giving out trade secrets and making it entertaining. I can speak for most others when I say that it was most educational.

Thanks to Rodney for the tethering setup without which learning would have been exceedingly difficult. It was great to see things in realtime in a great display.

We have learnt enough to have a bit of a strobist meet in the future. Perhaps we can organise an outdoor meetup ourselves. :? All we need is a few interesting subjects. Fire-twirlers come to mind. :violin:

With the recent presence of a creepy photographer or two around the USYD SURCAS people I am actually a bit hesitant to ask them again. But I'll dig around and see what I can scrape up with some of honorary members that I know personally.

A totally illuminating day

I learned a lot, especially how someone who knows what they are doing can use equipment to create great images.

Thanks to all who helped to make it work so well.

To Gerry and Suren for getting it all rolling. To Rodney for a setup that made it easy for all to see

And of course to Wendell for the time and teaching

Philip

Shikes. Thanks for trying again Cameron. In any case, it was just a thought; We should try and brainstorm some other subjects as well.

I can only reiterate what has already been said:
Thanks to Gerry and Suren for organising this. To Rodney for persevering with getting Lightroom tethering going. And to Wendell for all the effort, time, patience and sharing your knowledge. I got so many things out of this with many firsts.

It was great to meet all of the guys as well.
