3 Jan 2013 - Film Meet SydneyIt has been mentioned a few times in the Film sub forum...but I thought I may as well get this off the ground and ask for EOI's for a film meet.....bring any camera as long as it records on an analogue medium!! Once we get a show of hands we can work out when and where.....and if someone wants to come along but no longer owns any analogue recorders I am sure we can organise a loaner...and maybe even some film.
Expected attendees -myself (aim54x) -Patrick (Reschsmooth) -Gerry (BigGerry) -Gary (GStark) -Alfred (malificentmuse) -Peter (non-member) EDIT: DATE - 3 Jan 2013 PLACE - Circular Quay Wharf 6 TIME - 10.00 Last edited by aim54x on Mon Dec 31, 2012 10:36 am, edited 5 times in total.

Re: EOI - Film Meet Sydneycount me in, i got some ancient film thingy in a draw somewhere and no clue on how to use it, this sounds like a good excuse to actually use it! (and waste some film cause I reckon they will be either be all black or all white)

Re: EOI - Film Meet Sydney
See Gerry, many film cameras have a feature where you can actually open the back after each shot and check exposure. Obviously not like the newer digital cameras where there is a colour screen. If you look at the back of a Nikon F6, for example, there is a little LCD screen that produces a histogram. The older cameras didn't have this, and you had to actually open the back and check. If it is too dark to see, you can use a torch. Srsly, I am in for this, pending date. We can take this further, like we did a number of years ago, and run a film development bit afterwards. I have plenty of tanks and if we run the same film, can load a number of films in the tanks. I also have one dark bag to allow for loading the film. Regards, Patrick

Re: EOI - Film Meet SydneyI'm in as well, although this'll need to be next year for me.
I too have a change bag, a developing tank, and some filum. If we do this in summer, and go with Patrick's suggestion, we will also need to take into account the weather conditions on the day: higher temps can make processing a bit of a challenge, as we need to control the temperatures of the various soups that we use; having a supply of cold water or ice is sometimes prudent. Mind you, I expect that there'll be some olde skool apparatus at Patrick's this weekend. g.

You mean "hipster", I believe. But I refuse to inflict skinny jeans on the world. For temperature control, I have a stack of trays/tubs that can be used as water baths. [Incidentally, did my first real 'big' prints (12x15 on 16x20 paper) on the weekend. I am hoping to tone and mount them before the weekend.] Regards, Patrick

Re: EOI - Film Meet Sydney"hipsters" should be lined up and shot......they are not even worth a single round each!
Seriously, I have a bulk roller and some blank cartridges so if we want to ensure everyone gets the same film stock we can go down this route...and for kicks we can roll short (12exp) cartridges or extra long (40exp). Cameron

I am gonna lay a bet here, 99% chance I will get all black or all white and 1% chance it will be outta focus. Now, film groupies.. what film do I stick in this and where do i get said film? on the up side, I know how to change the aperture, shutter speed and focus the lens....it took me a while to work out how to open the thing gerry's photography journey

Re: EOI - Film Meet Sydney
Was there a take-up spool in the film chamber? The engraving says 6x9, which, in today's world, implies 120 or 220 film, but for the age of that one, I'm inclined to think the NLA 620 might be what's needed. Which means that you need to google converting 120 to 620. g.

What film were you looking at??
Google suggests there is a good chance that it is a 120/220......I am having trouble nailing the exact model of this camera though. Cameron

I found them while searching for 120 film also, the prices seem disturbingly reasonable what do peeps recommend to me for 120 film? Fujifilm Velvia 100 - Color Slide 120 Film and some Ilford Pan F Plus 50 - B&W 120 Film ? those are just names /types I have heard but really have no idea gerry's photography journey

Re: EOI - Film Meet Sydney
As a first time roll...go with FP4+ (125) or HP5+ (400)....nice and easy to use, readily available, relatively inexpensive and forgiving. If you prefer Kodak then 400TX Cameron

Re: EOI - Film Meet Sydney
Those prices seem really reasonable - I was paying the equivalent of about $9 per roll of FP4+ delivered from my usual ebay vendor. Agree with Cam's suggestions. I suggest avoiding slide film as the ease with which and cost of making a mistake is a lot higher (granted, a roll plus developing is about $20). You need to consider where you will get the rolls developed as well. I think very few labs develop B&W film, although not sure. Regards, Patrick

Re: EOI - Film Meet Sydney
Cheapest place in town for BW proccessing is actually Foto Riesel Create about $15 for Develop and Scan. There is Blanco Negro (who i will never send another roll of film to....) and there is always the DIY option (my preferred method) Cameron

Re: EOI - Film Meet Sydney
I have used FR and they were reasonable. But I agree, for someone who may go through a number of rolls, the DIY optoin is a PoP and quite accessible. Regards, Patrick

Re: EOI - Film Meet SydneyWell I guess it is only fair that I revisit this post and take stock. It looks like there won't be too many attendees other than the ones that have been listed in the first post. So we should move onto the next stage....WHEN/WHERE
Now it is well known that I am an idiot that works too much and struggles to find any time off...but I will have the 24-Dec - 4-Jan off work (I may still work the weekends at the camera store though) so I would be suggesting that maybe we should see if anyone else will be available for even a few hours on the 3rd or 4th of Jan 2013. Thoughts? Suggestions? Cameron

Re: EOI - Film Meet SydneyEither of those days suit me. As to where, well, part of that will depend on what we do after the 'shooting' part - do we congregate somewhere to develop the films or do we go on our merry ways?

Re: EOI - Film Meet SydneyJust thought I would revive this a little bit.....Thursday 3rd January as the date, maybe a stroll through the Rocks area or something else and then adjourning for food, and if we are keen we may be able to organise some Darkroom time (for instant gratification).
Patrick if you have any objections to the above discussed options let me know and I will see what I can organise. If anyone has any other ideas as to what to do/where to go please feel to let me know....Also we do need to work out a suitable time/place to meet. Cameron

Re: EOI - Film Meet Sydney
Cameron, no problem at all. We won't need the darkroom as such, just the change bag and tanks/reels. I will need to get some more developer, or mix up the D76 I have in the box. Regards, Patrick

Re: 3 Jan 2013 - Film Meet SydneyPatrick has made the great suggestion of taking the Manly Ferry, taking photos in Manly before returning for a session in the Rocks followed by an optional trip to process film for those who need instant gratification.
So we should meet at Circular Quay at the Manly Ferry Wharf at 10am aiming to catch the 10:10 ferry Cameron

Re: 3 Jan 2013 - Film Meet SydneySounds good. I was suggesting meet at Manly, catch the Manly Ferry as it makes its way to Circular Quay, then we can be so restless around the Rocks, catch a pub lunch and then go from there. Happy with either.
