Here is a review on the D200 that I haven't seen before.

Quite a bit of 'technical' and 'measurements' info that some people might be interested in. Quite long too :-)

I used my D200 on an engagement session on Boxing Day. What can I say  it is like an F100 compared to the F80. After shooting if for 4 hours, I will be investing in a 2nd one  AF was tops, battery was abit dissappointing compared to the D70, but I will see how it performs with the grip.

Have a 12V car battery in your backpack and connect it to the D200
So far, not so many happy camper with D200 battery's performance.

When you say the AF was tops... did you use more than just the centre AF point?

If so how were the side AF points?

I keep telling myself that if the centre AF point is a large improvement over the D70 (accuracy) then I would be able to go with a D200 over a D2X. I'm so used to doing the 'focus then recompose' with the D70 that I would be fine doing that on the D200 if the outer points aren't up to it.

However, a D2x would be very nice :)

YES AF is only compared to D100, D70 and S2

The battery was less then 50% after 3hrs

I tried all the different AF modes..it performed better the D70.

I have never used a D2X, but the D200 will serve me well with I do

Good to hear shutterbug. Disappointing about the battery performance when the thing was touted at 1800 images before recharge  Yep I think the grip with 2 enl-3es shoulfd do the trick. Hope to see some samples from you soon
cheers

Interesting about the battery life.

I wonder what's draining it so badly...

In a nutshell, the D200 has the same capacity battery as a D70/s, yet is expected to power the same size LCD as the D2X. Also it has a larger buffer than a D2X and nearly the same size files that it has to write to the CF card, plus a more powerful AF motor as well as several other gizmos and buttons that are not on the D70.

Anyone that believes Nikons spin that the battery could do all that and last longer than the same sized battery that powers its lower spec models also believes in fairies at the bottom of the garden and perpetual motion machines

Don't your faries maintain your perpetual motion machine ? Nothing like fairy dust and a little WD40 to keep the machine generating green energy for my anti-gravity rumpus room!

A much cheaper option would be to use AAs with the grip. You can buy a bagfull of 2500 mAh AA's for what they charge for a couple of EL-EN3e's .

So you can use AA batteries for the grip?

Sure can. It takes 6 x AA.

That's gotta be more economical than the S2's C123a's.

:D

Then I can share the batteries with my guitar practise amp which takes 6 AAs as well. :D I like that idea. :)
