Crumpler 6 million dollar home bag

Postby Jonas on Tue Jan 10, 2006 10:57 am

I picked up a Crumpler shoulder camera bag a fortnight ago. After using it on a recent trip down the NSW coast and on strolls around the Gold Coast, I thought I'd post some thoughts.

It retails for $150 from Crumpler but they had no stock right before Christmas so I got it through http://www.digitalcamerawarehouse.com.au for $135.

I can't fault the construction of the bag. It is well padded on all sides except the top, which is just a thin cover flap. Inside, removable velcro dividers are well padded. It has a padded shoulder strap and it isn't too heavy with a D70s and a couple of lenses.

The 6 mill has enough room for a camera the size of a D70s with lens. I can fit my camera with 18-70 kit lens attached without removing the lens hood. It also fits with Sigma 70-300DG attached, with lens hood reversed. There is also room in the dividers for another 4 lenses/flashes in total.

A front pocket has room enough for a notebook/paperback. I use it to hold four screw in-type filter cases. The top flap has a zip up mesh pocket where I store soft or small items such as cords and back caps.

The bag is a little bulkier and boxier than expected. I wanted a shoulder/satchel type bag that would look like any other bag. Those in the know would pick it as a camera bag in a second, but for the most part it is fairly low key.

The top flap can make it difficult to access the bag when standing unless you flip it back down between the bag and your body. With lens and camera inside, it is quite a tight fit. Although this also stops anything from rolling around.

I'd recommend to anyone who doesn't have a lot of gear or who wants a smallish bag for street photographer and similar. Yes, it is pricey, but it's in line with what you'd pay for a Lowepro or similar.

Nice looking bag, and thanks for the review.

Would it fit a 70-200VR in it? I currently need a smaller bag, rather than my Kata back pack (which is bomb proof).

I think nikon do a satchel type of bag, i found one on the net once.

Hi,

Nice bag. I use a backpack type as it holds more aequipment and good for trecking with on long walks. It also frees the hands up to carry another camera bag if needed. However the down side is you don't have the ability to quickly pull the camera out easily and I find I miss shots from time to time. Also at times it's nice to travel light. May have to invest in one.

Thanks for your review......

I have the 7 million dollar home and can get my F6 with 20-30 attached, D200 with 35-70 attached plus 50/1.4, 85/1.4, 135/2.8, SB-800 plus filters, film, spare batteries, cleaning gear, torch, small pair Gerber binoculars in there and have a Crumpler Bundle (large) attached to the side as well that has the remote cord and off camera flash cable etc.

The only problem is with all that gear in there it is heavy.

I am also looking at getting a 5 million dollar home just for carring the D200 with one or two extra lenses.

Raskill, from memory I read a review of the 7 mill and a user could only fit the 70-200VR in it by removing all the dividers and laying it flat along the bottom. Not ideal when you also want to have camera body, lenses etc.

To give you an idea of the depth of the bag, it fits the D70s with 70-300DG nicely, but anything longer would be a squeeze.
