I was looking for something like this once before (when I went on holidays and forgot my tripod head...). I settled for a wheat filled heatpack and lavender. Smelled good, and worked great!!!

I wonder if anyone else has any ideas for making a similar item?

many years ago I had a few bank bags modified to the sizes I need and filled em with sand.

to reduce dust I double bagged them.
at the time it was as rifle rests but have used them for camera beanbags many times over the years.
doesnt have 3 levels though.

call me a cheapskate.

I used to have few beanbags and sold them to members.
It's great stuff to use, lot better value than from cam-pod.
It's my bag everywhere I go.

Pretty simple idea. Looks useful to have multiple sections so you can fold it into creative shapes. Patent pending, but that only means you can't duplicate it for commercial purposes, not that you can't copy it for personal use. Very easy to run up a multi-section cushion and stuff it with wheat/barley/rice if anyone has a knack for home decorations.

I have something similar in my cam-bag but it is filled with silica-gel, for those keeping my camera-bag dry in humid climates. Although i've never rested my camera on it.

I made one up for myself a couple of years ago and it's been terrific. All I did was grab some "beans" from our old bean bag and put them into a (clean!) Glad Sandwich bag, with the sealable top and presto! Brilliant. Doesn't look too professional, but who cares? It works a treat.

Of course, there are always "escapee beans" in the process, but once caught and disposed of, no problem.

Simple, extremely easy and very cheap to make.

I'm really glad to hear this, as I was about to ask. I cycle tour and bushwalk, so the idea of carrying heavy stuff doesn't appeal. I'm going to go find a beanbag to burgle some beans out of. I might see if I can use it for a pillow too.

When I'm travelling I carry a small bag made out of an old curtain lining with a zip that my girlfriend made for my birthday a few years ago! I pack it empty, then on arrival I buy a cheap bag of rice (brown or white, it's up to you!!) and fill 'er up (the bag!!). Then, when I'm preparing to leave the country I donate the rice to anyone who wants it - often goes down fairly well in Africa!

Liam =] PS - when packing your bean bag, don't fill it tight..leave enough space to make a nice groove for your lens to lie thru.
