Just wanted to say how shocked I was at how damn bright the Nikon F80 with the 85mm F1.8 is. I shot with a friends unit today and it was an absolute joy to use manually focussing!!

I'm tempted to go and play with Kiev medium format systems just to see if their viewfinders can compare in brightness and clarity. :)

You will find that the F80 viewfinder is quite dark compared to older model Nikons even the base model F50 viewfinder is brighter.

The F80's viewfinder is bit darker than other older Nikons... but its damm more comfortable than D70's tiny viewfinder

I still miss the hip-level viewfinders of the oldies Fs... which you can just remove the top prism and have a nice hip level finder...

was that prism removal possible with the old FM2? I had never heard that of the old F series Nikons. I'm wanting to get one of those lush Fmount Zeiss F1.4 50mm lenses for both my D70 and the old FM2 that's kicking round at my sister's place.

The Zeiss would be very sweet to own but unfortunately I have too many lenses in the 50mm range.

Not on any FM or FE, I'm afraid. They were all fixed prisms.

Most of the Fs had removable prisms, but not, I believe any of the Nikkormats, nor FE/FM/EM/FG/FA/Fx01 etc.

Of that latter grouping, with the exception of the EM and FG, the rest did have interchangable backs and focusing screens though.

Mark - the old F series was the pro cameras of their time. There was another famous F camera - the Canon F1, one of the best Canon ever made
