I've just been overseas to attend a wedding, and because of our travel arrangements, I wasn't able to pack my D70.
I bought a P&S - the Canon A620 - $450 after GST rebate; 7.1 megapixels; 35-140mm zoom.
I was happy with the portability, and it was able to handle most of the photographic situations admirably.
A couple of issues:
-shutter lag still a problem when using flash
-LCD useless in sunlight, a viewfinder is still essential in my opinion (the A620 has a viewfinder)
-still some noise issues by comparison with my D70
-There isn't the same user satisfaction in making a photo as there is with a DLSR

Here are 3 examples (click for larger pix):

1. Athens sunset. You can see the Acropolis in the background (ISO 100; 1/60sec; f3.5):

2. Temple of Apollo at Delphi (ISO 100; 1/800sec; f4.0):

3. "The Charioteer" in the Delphi Museum. Carved in 450 BC, the metal figure is all that's left, but the museum has an artist's impression of what the original would have looked like, and I was able to position them just right for this image (ISO 100; 1/100sec; f4.0):

What! No interest in how the latest P&S cameras perform? :lol:

I must say I am very happy with most of the images from the trip. A couple were ruined because of shutter lag, these were mainly night pix where flash was needed. Noise is evident in one or two also, particularly in sky areas at lower EVs.

There's no way this camera will replace my Nikon, but it's good to have an alternative for those times that lugging a back-pack full of gear is not possible.

Trevor, I'm only just back myself so a little behind the eightball, I too used a P&S while on holiday (as well as the D70) with some good results.

Out of these shots my favourite is #3 the Charioteer, I found it really interesting and its a shame more of it isn't intact.

The other two are nice but don't hold my interest like the first.

Of course I expected your new camera to perform well, it's 7.1 mp not like those crappy old 6mp cameras.

Thanks Craig. I should've known that I could count on you for a reply.

I tried to present images taken under different circumstances (evening low-light; bright daylight and interior lighting), and they have been posted to give an idea of the camera's capabilities, rather than my artistic capabilities. :lol:
