unfortunately the 80-200 f2.8 is unavailable everywhere around the globe. and no one can give an answer as to the next shipment. looks like i might just settle for the 70-200 f2.8 speed machine. how good is this lens?

Jethro, very good. Really not much to complain about at all. Have a look at Ron Resnicks review

or Bjorn Rorslett's review

There is not much not to like except the price

At twice the price of the 80-200, the 70-200 is definitely twice as good (IMHO). :)

If you come along to the meets and you ask Birddog114 nicely, I am sure he will let you play with his.

Once you have used it, you'll have a very hard time removing the smile off your face.

I myself think it is well worth every cent. Very contrasty, fast auto focus and the VR becomes very handy on that day when the light is low or windy and you have forgotten your tripod.
