Hi,
I am about to purchase a ring flash to suit Canon 400D with Canon 100mm Macro lense and am trying to decide between Canon MR-14, or sigma EM-140 . Would be really interested to hear review for those who may use /own either or both

Hi Deb - I've had no experience with this type of equipment.

1- Canon Macro Ring Lite MR-14EX:

2- Sigma EM-140 DG Ring Flash:

Leave you to do some more research.

Deb,

In my early years of photography, I lusted for a ring flash. I thought one would be really cool and would ensure macro subjects would be lit well. I was/am also a keen nature photographer. While I was dreaming about the ring flash, I read a lot of books on nature photography. Interestingly, the ones I read either said nothing about ring flashes or even recommended against them because they tend to create lighting that looks unnatural. I never ended up buying one.

For the last 15 years or so I have been using a cheap small manual flash mounted on a bracket and have found this works well even with my 60mm macro lens which has a closer lens to subject distance than your 100mm lens.

As the light from the flash only comes from one direction, I get a more natural look to the photographs. I can post some examples, if you like.

Of course, you may have purposes for the ring flash other than nature. In that case, ignore my comments. ;)

Mods,

This thread probably needs to be moved to Equipment Reviews.

Indeed. Thanx, and done.
