Well I got the Nikkor 70-300 G AF zoom with the kit I bought...
I am very pleasantly suprised with the quality of photo that this lens takes!
I have not been particularly nasty to it yet but have seen no evidence of fringing softness yet... more to follow...
I have posted a photo taken with it in the Floriade thread in Canberra

I got my 70-300 out today and took a few shots. I am still impressed but perhaps not having the chance to use high end Nikkor IS equipped lenses I am not aware of its deficiencies as much. I would be interested in your further evaluation of it. I have seen comment on backfocusing criticism and 'soft focus' with this lens on the Nikonians site although I am not exactly sure of what 'soft focus' means in a technical sense. Any other thoughts?

Yes I should put more info here...
I have noticed some purple fringing in Backlit situations but this was expected. AF is fairly slow to so if you miss the focus and it goes for a hunt your lost...
I have not had the problems in soft focus that some others have had, but I am not picky, the images I get are definately useable!
This lens is good value for money, at ~300. But you do get what you pay for , I would love just a stop or so wider at telephoto, you need a real bright day to carch good action.
Another good thing about this lens is somthing people tend to use to detract from it: It is very light, making it a good travel lens
