Can people recommend me a D200 grip to buy?
What are people thoughts on the grip thats available thru Poon, didn't find any reviews on it here on the site.

jsut buy the nikon grip for the D200 ..dont see any reason not to .

Buy the Nikon brand one. I have heard a few horror stories about the other ones. Not heaps but enough to warrant me forking over a little bit extra for some security.

Why do you want the grip? Its just as easy to carry your spare battery in your pocket. The D200 is already a seriously heavy camera and adding the grip only increases the weight and makes it more difficult to fit the camera into a camera bag/toploader/backpack etc. It also adds more backend weight when tripodding using the lens foot which in turn means a lot more load on the tripod head.

I already have the Nikon MBD200 and really don't think it's worthwhile. The only advangate to the grip is the alternate (portrait mode) command/sub command dials and shutter button but this doesn't offset the weight and size.

Dont want to rock the boat but I bought the non-genine one from Poon and it works for me. With the one I've got the batteries load from the end not the back, so the access door is only small. It was also half the price.

As Mark says they do add weight to the kit but I find it more convenient to have the 2nd battery on board when the 1st one runs out especially at the race track.

The vertical shutter release is also good.

As above the Nikon brand...MB-D200. I never had a problem wiht mine. Found it gave the d200 a better feel more balanced..

Obviously, for others, the above points are not relevant or do not outweigh the additional size and weight. The conclusion: each to their own.

I wanted it for a couple of reasons:

1) Additional battery meant I didn't have to swap batteries as often, I normally do around 1000 - 1200 shots a day at a race meeting so this would mean I could get away with no changes during the day.
2) The extra weight was wanted to offset the heavier glass at the front.
3) My hands are not small, and I found with the D70 that my fingers would curl underneath making it annoying to use hand held over an entire day.

The Bonuses were:

1) Vertical release and controls.

The drawbacks:

1) Plastic feel to the grip, nothing like the body.

Remember these were my reasons for the grip.

I also went with the OEM grip as there were no others at the time, I hear the grip for the D300 is streets ahead and can't wait to see one. The other thing is that if you find the grip too big for normal use and tripod use, you can simply take it off, nothing too difficult there, but mine stays on all the time, I've not really had many issues with it being there at all. Yes on a tripod with a heavy lens it can wobble a bit, and it can be conspicuous in a crowd, but hey I prefer the feel of the camera with it on there (plus I yearn for a pro body and this is the substitute)...
