walking around with the 14_24 f2.8

hi

just got the new nikon 14-24 f2.8

1st impressions is that the ultra wide distortion at 14mm is pretty sharp almost to the edges
although using an old 17-35 on a full frame D3 yields very similar results when compared to the 14mm field of view
with of course a little bit more distortion

I would compare this lens to the 12-24 which i had but lacking the ability to fit on filters like a polarizer the 12-24 is slightly more practical

but 2 big advantages with the new 14-24 is that its 2.8 all the way through and it has a realy minimum focus distance better than that of the 12-24 or 17-35

i'm going to test further in low light and really close subject to lens distance tests at 2.8 a bit later

but as a walkaround lens it fairs pretty well

You're making that 14-24 sing Wendell. I particularly like the last 3 images, subjects well suited to the focal length. The lens seems to yield beautifully crisp images. Impressive!
cheers

I am kind of curious how much you use the 14 - 17 areas of the 14-24 lens. I also have the 17-35 which I love on the D700 (fx).
Also experienced in the 12-24 on the D200, it works well enough, though the 17-35 on the D700 is theoretically a tad wider (untested, but the numbers suggest).

i mainly use the lens at 14mm

the distortion on the 17 end of the 17-35 on an fx sensor is more dramatic
but optically 14mm is wider on the fdx and doesnt look as distorred from what i understand
