Russian-made Zenit 35mm cameras were around many years ago, but I haven't heard much of them lately.
Then there was Pat Zenitar, female pop singer from the '80s, now a resident judge on one of those search for the star shows!
I once tried an experiment with a Zenith lens. I took a couple of shots through the Zenith and then used a beer glass as a lens and took a couple more shots. The shots using the beer glass were sharper.

Have you tried the Coke glass? or Pepsi? better than the beer glass Birddog114

Ahh but Birdy, you have to drink the contents first, so I concur with Matt, the beer glass is the way to go.
Mind you, I'll be having a Coke in a few mins and trying her out hehe The SB800 is working a treat BTW, thanks again mate!
Yes, John. You may not have caught the glint of mischief in my post (not that I could blame anyone there!) - I was trying to be funny. Sorry about that, Chief.
Trevor, try harder next time my karma just ran over your dogma
I'm not old enought to know who he/she is.
I saw in the image reviews forum there are a couple of people who'd be keen to swap their sigma 12-24 for this one...

That depends .... If glass has been made in Sankt-Peterburg (Leningrad) at LOMO factory, it might be very good and worth to try prime lens. I wouldn't buy russian zooms as they could have mechanical problems Mikhail

Mikhail - I will retract what I said after finding out that these lenses are actually made by BeLOMO and KMZ. These 2 factories were dedicated exclusively to military production and as such would produce excellent optics.
The Zenitar is Russian and the Pelang is Byelorussian. Chris

Chris, So all they're good! aren't they? Birddog114

As a former citizen of the former USSR I can atest that Zenith and Zenithar optics are of top (if not the best) quality, and to second what Chris said the Leningrad (now St. Petersbourg) LOMO factory was producing military optics.
Alex
Honestly, I only like their Vodka not "helga" or "Holga"
Russian produces a top optic materials, supplied to Nikon + Canon, but don't have much experiences of their glasses. Birddog114

Много спасибо I hope that is the right translation Chris

Chirs,
Yep.... You must have learnt it in your military days... means... 'Thanks a lot'. Birddog, The optics is probably very good, but as for the other things, e.g. mechanics and electronics - don't hold your breath. Alex
I think one has to also consider the ”appropriation” of many German industries by the Russians at wars end. These included Zeiss Ikon and Contax which became Pentacon.
The Contax production was transferred to the USSR and the first production camera was called the Volga. This was changed to the Kiev camera and production started in 1947. The Carl Zeiss microscope facilities were moved to an area near St Petersburg and was named LOMO and still produces microscopes to this day. So we can say with some authority that the Russian glass has its history locked to the superb German glass produced at Jena. Chris
