Its shopping time and I am having trouble deciding which lense to get.

Sigma 105 macro or 150 macro.

Am keen on the extra reach of the 150mm and extra working distance and tighter angle. But not sure if I can justify paying nearly double the price.

Would love to hear from people who have used either of these lenses.

Would also be interedted to learn how well they perform as telephoto lenses.

I have the 180mm Sigma macro and I am really glad of the extra working distance. the macro lenses are really sharp and so some people use the 100mm macros for portraits. I have used the 180mm for this as well but you do have to stand a long way back. This actually came in handy when taking photos of my 3 month old son as he just stares at the camera when I am close.

The lens can actually focus pretty quickly when not doing macro shots but I have not tried it for fast action sports as I use my 120-300f2.8 for that.

I have considered both sigma and tamron 180's but like te extra speed of the 150.

I guess what I am really trying to work out is if:

As a beginner will I bew able to utilise the 150mm lense?

and

Maybe the 105mm will do all I want it to do for a whole lot less $$$.

It's easy solution, get one of each and try then sell or ebay whatever you don't need later

It’s not the lens but the button pusher who is important. I have a 105 and I am very happy with it - others have the 150 and are happy.

I am seriously leaning towards the 150mm now.

If you are not a good button pusher - use the IR remote

BUt the remote has a button as well!?!

i'll throw a spanner in for you.... as i've said previously, you can't go past the tamron 90mm macro.

Dhess, my question is do you have a good tripod? I have the sigma 105, which can easily be handheld. I recently tried Birddy's 200mm, which can also be handheld but in most situations demands a tripod. I have not used the 150mm.

But where can I get the Tamron 90 or 180 for a good price?

I have a Manfrotto 055NAT3 tripod with a 486RC2 head.

Don't know it is considered good or not but it shuld do.

Birddog doesn't do Tamron gear.

I've searched a bit but can't see if there's been much discussion on the site about using primes vs zoom lenses.

Does anyone use only primes? (I do like Jamesm's images).

Or do sensor hygiene issues limit the amount of lens changing people are happy with?

And do the primes out resolve the capacity of censor anyway?

I have coupe Tamron lenses but not keen in selling them, cos prices wise.
In comparision with the Tamron & Sigma, Sigma has more values and qualities than Tamron.

My experience is quite the reverse.

I can see myself using Tamron on occassions.

I wouldn't mind having a go at one of the numerous geckos crawling all over the buildings.
