dear monopod enthusiasts,

I am considring to buy the Manfrotto 234 swivel / tilt head (to use on a monopod).
Has anyone got one of these ?
What experience do you have with it ?
Is it working fine ?

I think Vanbar selling them but could not remember how much, less than $60.00.

Joet also has this one, in RC2 form. I think I'll shortly join the 234 club too! The head alone from Vanbar is about $30, with RC2 QR and plate it's about $60.

Christian I have one on my Manfrotto mono and it's great. I got the version with the quick release plate $65 here
The QRP is well worth the extra $30

Peter, can you use this in the portrait position as well?

Yeah, I got the 234 non quick release plate - mated to my 681B it looks funny (cos it's small and the 681 base plate/platform is big). I'll be selling mine when I get back into Sydney. It works good in theory (ability to point tele lens up and down, portrait position, etc.) but I think it compromises stability somewhat.

I like the 234 so much i bought two. One i bought from a camera shop in Sydney ($30) and the other from centre.net.au ($32)

I also use the RRS L-plate and QR mount on my monopod. It works well.

No. It moves up & down only. Plus the monopod itself gives left to right movement

Thanks Peter, i am thinking of maybe getting a ball head at some stage just to put on it incase i hapen to use it somewhere so i can put camera in vertical with out turning the lot, but not fussed as i all ways shoot hand held anyway.

Just went and got mine out of the car to have a look and now have it in front of me. The centre.net site says "Simply tilt the head to allow a camera on a Monopod to be turned 90° to provide either a vertical or horizontal format." This is correct , sort of. The head has one axis of movement. but can move thorugh 180 deg from plate vertical on one side through horizontal at the top, to vertical on the other side. So you CAN get horizontal and vertical orientation, but nothing like a ball head. Hope that's clearer

Manfrotto 322RC2 Grip Action Ball Head on his and well feels ok but cant say i like it much. I told him i used to use my monopod when i first started doing bikes and he come down from Adelaide and had just brought a 20D setup and as i said i find i can move around better without the pod, and just shoot handheld in this situation, but if i go to the Zoo or something it would be handy to use the MP. Anyhow might still go with a ball head later on.
