I received my hoya close up filter set yesterday it includes the following filters

+2
+4

I also purchased a +3 as well.

I decided to test these little buggers out last night so i took photos on an apple on my coffee table.

For the first half of the test was just focusing on any part of the apple and it is a little distracting when you look at them in sequence.

the second half is better where i am trying to focus on the base of the stem.

Just a note with each increase in magnification the working distance became closer so by the end I had move the camera about an inch closer to the apple than when i had started.

they get you up close and personal, I find that it is hard to tell how good your lenses are photographing an apple though. the shine can hide detail.

When I got mine (nikon 5T) I was trying to figure out maximum sizes, depth of field etc using common things I had at hand when a friend walked past and asked me what I was doing. When I explained, he said why dont you just photograph a ruler??

This really hadn't occured to me at all and made so much sense that I dug out an engineers rule I had and photographed it.
I had it perpendicular to the lens axis to determine closest reproduction ratios and I put it at 45 degrees to lens axis and focused on a point midway along the ruler so I was able to get a good idea of depth of fields that I could expect using different apertures.

finally, because the ruler is square and even, I could determine any distortions I might introduce.

The ruler I used had good texture, scratches etc and was matt finished so no shine to hide details. Of course I used the tripod for repeatability between test shots.

What lens were you using??

I am using a nikon 5t close up lens.
this is 62mm and I use it on my 300mm nikon enthusiasts kit lens
I used part of my 200 cashback from maxwells to get that.
ordered from the states for around $40 aud on my doorstep.

Well there is something to do after the wife goes to bed

my face was like homer simpsons when my friend said just use a ruler d'oh!! I had planned to use coins or anything at hand and maybe measure them afterwards!! but now I just look at my pictures and everything I need is right there.

sometimes you just dont see the wood for the trees.
