I am looking for a lens to take traveling this one seems ideal but I have read Tom Hogans review that was not overly complimentry of this lens.
Does anyone have this lens?
Can it replace my kit lens?
Are there any other lenses that anyone can suggest that will be good for traveling

I have only just recieved mine so I cant comment to much.
I did however buy it to replace my kit lens, as my main walk around. I think the extra reach will be helpfull as will the VR.
There are a few others here with the lens, who I hope will give you better insite.
Do as search for 24-120 should be a fair amount of info already discussed.

I have had this lens for quite a while. It is an excellent walk around lens and since getting this my 18-70 is out of my kit and back in its cardboard box. I thoroughly recommend it.

Yes, and yes, without a doubt. So many of us here have done exactly that. It's a perfect walk-around lens, and, used stoped down one or two stops, it gives excellent images.
And the VR is a bonus.

I'd strongly suggest the Nikkor 12-24. It will let you get those shots inside those cathederals and restaurants.
Not to mention that it's pretty handy for landscapes too.

I was going to recommend Sigma 12-24 but ... ehhh ... Gary is here
Accordingly to 24-120VR - good lens and beats kit lens easily in many aspects

Is that can be mounted on the glass without any gap

Vignetting to the max at 12 mm I should imagine... I should test it! Might be better at the telephoto end, but that's not what I bought my wide-angle lens for!

I have both the Sigma 12-24 and the Nikor 24-120 and I am happy with both. Like Stubbsy, since I got the 24-120, the 18-70 is back in the box!

There is a gap but we are talking about possibility, aren't we?
There is filter tread in the hood.

There you go again, Stubbsy, making me drool all over myself. There are certainly no skies like that here in California. You're a lucky lot down under. Beautiful shot. And I think I'll have to start saving up for one of them 12-24's, too.

Geoff
How did you install it?

Geoff,
A quick "rule of thumb" is to point to the sun with your hand in a gun formation (thumb cocked and 1st finger pointing with remainder of 3 fingers curled into your palm)
Disclaimer - Please don't look at the sun directly for safety reasons!
With your extended finger point to the sun and your thumb pointing verticaly, rotate your thumb 90 degree's either anti clockwise or clockwise pivoting through your 1st finger (Your wrist should be rotating).
Now where ever you thumb is pointing is where you will get the maximum "blue" in the sky with you CP filter.
You will still need to rotate the filter at this angle and look through the viewfinder at the same time until you see the effect you crave.
Remember if you switch you camera to portrait from landscape will need to rotate the filter by 90 degree's to compensate.
You might also have to dial in -1 or -2 stops in the EV to adjust for the darker filter on your lens.
Hope the helps
Paul

Paul is spot on, but even into the sun it works, just the effect is less. The cloud shot above was into the sun, the one below was at right angles. Notice the blue in the sky and the really well defined clouds - this was taken at 12:30 pm when the sun was nice and bright:

Argh, I shouldn't have read this thread: now I'm developing some stirrings of lust for a 24-120mm VR.

Geoff,
You should attent the workshop last week at Stockton beach.
There're HB and Stubbsy + sheepie, they're very keen on the CPL topic.

I would say that would be a great decision, and a great choice.

Geoff you missed it - there are two posts of cloud shots I took at Stockton beach

here
All shots taken on the sand dunes between Anna Bay and Stockton north of Newcastle. Birddog will be organising another meet up there later this year or early next year.

Sounds cool. Unfortunately, my roster at work doesn't extend that far yet so I can't do any planning. I'll have to do the wait and see approach. Hypethetically though, either date is fine. I don't need a 4WD though I hope.

IMHO, the 24-120VR would work very well as a combo with a 12-24. However, if you don't have the famed 12-24, think twice about getting the 24-120VR, depending on your shooting style...
I don't have the 12-24 (yet...) and take most of my photos at the 18mm end of the kit lens; I wouldn't appreciate lacking this crucial wide-angle, even for a few weeks!
