Get well soon or RIP my D100

Postby ipv6ready on Mon Jul 18, 2005 11:02 pm

My D100 today headed to intensive care unit at Maxwell.

My Shutter shat itself on the weekend........though it gave me good service for over almost three years.

Maxwell told be this was expected on my last visit - they estimated I had gone over my MTBF last year????? How would they know??????? Are they following me around??????

Soon I "might" be releasing my orphaned D100 accessories AC Adapter for CCD Cleaning & Mb-D100 & 5 Batteries & 1/2 cup eyepiece & Sb80dx & battery chargers.

Do we have any D100 users here - too soon to take offers but if forum users are interested I will offer very good pricing for D100 items. This will depend of course if D100 cannot be revived.

Coincidence my newish P&S arrived for my GF today a Nikon Coolpix 5700 with vertical grip. Hmmm I might need to use it for a while

I really need my tax return to get my new D2x!!!!!! No reason to stop and think now.

Sorry to hear about your D100 but it got me thinking about my D1 - I had it for four years and took over 100,000 shots and it was till going strong when I sold it

Ever since going digital I press the shutter to often  Way more then film.

I cannot even estimate how many times i have pressed the shutter.

My last trip i filled up 12Gb of photos. 3 weeks in HK and China. Shooting mainly raw and jpeg when I was running low on storage. Lappy at hotel

As i tend to fill up two or three 1Gb cards full almost every time I shoot and get only maybe 5 per hundred I like. Of course I aslo delete lots of shots on the spot.

At least my two sigmas are alive and kicking actually looking at them they are doing better then my 3 nikkors :!:

Thinking about how often I press then shutter a D2x is looking cheap. Cost three times as much (compared to my purchase price in 2002) but likely to last five times as long.

ipv6ready,

Sad to hear that but, mate, you have to look forward for a new toy! :)

Birddog,

Maybe it still strong because you've got more powerful toys to play with? :)

Exactly! If you're thinking of taking lot of photos or use it daily as tool of trade, think about the second body. Nothing there gives you the firm assurance, your baby still obey your order in anytime you need it. Each device has its limitation, especially with DSLR.

Don't be disappointed if you pulled your D70 out of the bag today and the camera does not switch on, even with full charged battery

How much did I paid for the D100, 3.1/2 years ago? closed to the premium of the brand new D2Hs today  Or the D1x?
Today the price of the D2x is closed to 1/2 price of the D1X when it was first released.

Is it prediction or you just know how to kill them remotely? :)

Accordingly to the price, it might be twice cheaper as D1X when it was just released but it still expensive for pure amteur. And as most of my pictures just a crap I won't buy D2X 'till I'll learn how to master D70 at least

Three weeks ago, I sold a Nikkor 17-55 to one Pro photos with a D2x,
He took home and called me the day after complained the lens did not focus, I asked him to bring it back.
Guess what? the switch "M/A -M" on the lens was switched to manual.

Another true story,

A month ago, a wedding photos bought a Nikkor 17-55Dx.

He took home and three hours later called on the phone and expressed his anger. The nature was after he took the lens home, he called Maxwell and quoted its serial number with the purpose to find out : if it's new or was in repair or refurbished.

Maxwell Service Center replied: "it was in service not long ago".

As usual, I explained it was the fresh source and original was from HKG, just landed in my store two days before. How can this happened and how Maxwell can track on service histories of lens purchased O/S.

He accepted the condition of buying grey import from the beginning.

I asked him to come back and had me on the phone with Maxwell while he was standing beside.

I talked to Maxwell Service Center and gave the same serial number,
Maxwell: "That invoice was last year invoice"

I asked: what the service for?

Maxwell: Could not tell cos it was long ago.

I told the wedding photos: The number you gave them was the invoice number not the serial number of the lens.

He grabbed the phone and had an argument with Maxwell.

Finally, he walked out with his face

A "real idiot wedding photos"! can we name him as the Pro-photographer of the year!

THat is incredible Birdy, I imagine that you were quite satisfied when you realised that he was reading the invoice number, not the serial #. I can't believe the intelligence of some people in this world, and to think he's making money as a 'pro photographer'...scary :)

Thanks all. Especially about the SB-80DX, I will upgrade the flash in the future.

I am investigating what I can keep and what I can offload.

Though about having a second body Birdy, I think for many amateurs like me, we cannot afford to have a second body.

Well the D100 was the first camera I bought with my money before that all other Nikon was hand me downs or borrowed from family and never returned 8) .

So after the splash of $2500 for D100 at the time a good price, what cash I had left went into getting some decent glass. 2 x Sigma f2.8 zooms and three Nikkor primes and one Tokina.

Hlop, thanks for the 17-70mm DX my first Nikkor Zoom a great lens  the reason my D100 went to hospital  . New toy and the shutter went over time.

Well at least now I have a honest reason why I need to buy a D2x rather then a stupid rock that does not even have colour in it :!: :!:

In my years I have come across my fair share of idiots but my favourite was the guy who phoned me to ask why, when he looked through the viewfinder he could not see anything

Your first thoughts might be that he had not taken the lens cap off - NO - he had no lens on the body

It happenned! and no surprise to me at all!

They just don't have only your camera to look at or check.

 Your D100 has to be dis-infected from the Service counter prior to pass to the techies  to avoid "white powder" or other harmful things get into their Dept. and it was transferred by a slowest turtle in this world

Sitback & relax, they will let you know soon.

I agree with you Birdie, i understand I am nnot the only customer and maybe i should clarify my statement...I was fine that it took two days for the camera to be seen by a techie...actually I expect that with the amount of work nikon would have and with other lines they distrubute.

It was more the sequence of events
SMS 5:31 for no reason
Automated answer
Why tell me the techie is looking at it
and then say Friday for a quote

Finally it only really got me angry because the CS told me the system cannot be updated so I can logon! Also why send SMS at 5:31PM :!: :!:

Without the SMS I would not have even rang nor enquired till mid next week.

I guess it is how it was ansewered and handled that got me ticked off.

YEah

i get the same deal from Maxwell too, the runaround but last night i was perfectly content not worry about my camera and just watch the simpsons, I do have a lot of spare time now, maybe it's a blessing

Maxwell said it would take a week, it better because i have a office party next friday and to my surprise I am the self designated photographer.

Last year my coolpix 8700 went into service 2 times the oen i have today is my third! the warranty ends in september maybe i can get my fourth or is that just pushing it?

Someone said to me Maxwell technicians are great but the management and CRM departments are horrible.

Is this the first time you experienced with Nikon/ Maxwell Service?
I normally don't give them my mobile phone number, the phone number I gave to them is one of the "Best House" in Surry Hill

Cos I'm in the area of Maxwell's office nearly everyday, my suppliers are there.

No this is just an isolated incident, I have all the confidence in the cosmos to buy another D2x or better camera from Birddog

I actually think of it as vacation time, no more stress

My camera is getting a pampering too from gorgeous Nikon service technicians, it's having a ball of a time!

when i get it back it will be positively glowing and a happy camera means better end results!

Wrong update,

The Technician needs to go to the above mentioned places to get it tested.

Do you think they do their services at their location?

Or

Outsource?

I'd LIKE to believe their techies are in-house... in that shiny new warehouse, presumably upto ISO9000 standards.

Likewise I'd like to believe ipv6's D100, Wendell's D2X and my D70 are having a nice Nikon teaparty in there.

Most of that building is the warehouse, office is upstair, Sevice counter and spare part are on one side, small room for tech in the back with shelves.
They might send all repair to their outsources,
Please note: Maxwell outsource all their local service center for Nikon's products in each State, just do a small part as checking, verifying and tatatata of small work inhouse that's the reason why the D100 took few days to get to their Service Dept from Service Counter

You are making me cry!!!!!!
I hope it is not Poraday who services the cameras or I could of got my GF to walk it over at lunch.

I thought taking it direct to the source would of sped up the repair or burial.

The reason I wanted the answer quickly was .... I want to know if i must spend my tax return on the body or i can dream about other things Nikkor or Sigma.

Eitherway I think I already spent my return

I hate this site and my GF hates it even more, before I started reading here I only knew of few lenses and never thought about buying them.

Cubic Zirconia for my GF   Seconds thought should not give my GF my Nikon without being very close to it for protection from jealousy

My camera is getting a pampering too from gorgeous Nikon service technicians, it's having a ball of a time!

when i get it back it will be positively glowing and a happy camera means better end results!

Peter I don't know it probably decided that a holiday at Maxwell was better than being snug in my caring hands.

'err' message on the LCD screen that means camera malfunction according to the manual

No i did not drop it, cook it, wash it, abuse it nor strangle it to death with black gaffer tape, I treated it with the upmost care.

these things happen, it's a mechanical device.

That's right! cos Canon has their Head Office and branches offfice in Australia.
Nikon does not have the same set up as Canon, so they outsource their contractors in each States and same as in New Zealand. Their contractors received replacement parts from Nikon/ Maxwell.
Service from Canon is even worse than Maxwell's contractors for Nikon products. I knew a photog has his Canon 1Ds MKII there nearly 3 months for waiting of parts  and few guys with 20D taking long term holiday with Canon Service Center.
Sorry I do not flame them but would like to reveal the truth of the Service of the Brand name which I was engaged with.

Thanks for the feeback, t's great to hear your camera revived for $200! Still impressive: 8 hours labour at this price means they charged... $25 an hour! I would have expected much more! Good on you!

I think you still have your lucky to escape the "Tiger Shark" and your D100 back to life after went into coma.

Perhaps, the girl or the boy from Maxwell Service Center "love" your voice over the phone.

So, Sorry! no more excuse to claim for the replacement of the D2x  I heard this from behind where you're sitting.

Pls. note: 3 months extended warranty from the date of completed repair.

Great news. Let's hope for several more years' life after this service.

Thank you, all.

I was actually thinking of selling this after repairing it and using as a deposit.

I thought the aligned stars were telling me to get a D2x, but now it seems the GOD work in mysterious ways and it was really telling me that D200 is the way to much coinicidence.

Though as much as owning a D2x is tempting the other thread about the release of D200 is making me wait.

If I understand it correctly the D100 was pulled from the market so a D200 must be in within a year?.

I guess it is a compromised D2x between D70 and D2x. What more can you ask for.

Always 6500 reasons to wait.

ipv6, while I'm happy you got your D100 back and ready for action again - it seems consistency is not one of Maxwell's strong suits. My D70 is still on vacation and they're not being straight with me, giving me the same excuse they did a month ago. <sigh>

Is this the same "all our technicians are sick with the flu"?
I had this same excuse for over a week.

I actually rang in the morning after 7 working days and asked for progress report. As I do not have internet access to the system (see the original few posts) and the lady said, it is still getting fixed.

an hour later a sms to say pick up? :D

I hope you have the same "good" news :) :)
