I can probably convince Lorraine to finance the purchase a 17-55DX, but now a printer for AU$3200 as well

Rob
The Epson 4800 printer has the same workings as the 7600, and is a very good printer. To get the best from your printer you must have your screen profiled, and each stock you use, so invest in a spyder or Eye one to do the profiling for screen and stock.
The Epson paper profiles that come with your printer are also quite good, and the best stock is either Epson or Ilford as both of these stocks work very well with Epson profiles. When your printer is installed have them check your colour management in Photoshop so it is set up to get the best from your printer and take notes of any changes made so if you change a setting yourself it will be easy to reset.
This printer will also take the large size inks which works out to be a lot cheaper. As you are a bit out of town I would say have a spare set of inks. If you need any more information or help please PM me....

..... just read this review and I do not think you have any worries...... I do not change the black ink cartage when I change from glossy to matt stock I just use the Photo black cartage for both, I have found very little difference in print quality. The new inks will give you brighter colour prints and better Black & White prints, and it will be hard to pick if Epson stock is better than Ilford stock.
You will be pleased with the printer when it is up and running, do small test prints as stock and inks can become expensive when testing.....
have fun.....
