Hi Guys!
Lucky me has been given some money to spend on photography gear.
I have $1000 to play with and I've been considering these options
Nikon 85mm F1.4D
OR
Nikon 50m m F1.4D & SB800
The only lense I have is the kit lense and I want to start taking some more photographs so I thought the above options would be the best.
I've see some stunning shots from the 50mm f1.4 and I remember using Birddogs 85mm f1.4 at the meet (my jaw dropped)
What do you guys think?
Thanks
Kris

Kris,
If you know where we can get 85mm f/1.4 lenses for a grand please let me know!!
I reckon for a grand (and perhaps a few dollars more) I'd look at the 50mm f/1.4 (if you want the shallow depth of field) and the 35mm f/2. Keep in mind that many reviews rate the 50mm f/1.8 as a better lens than the f1.4 and it is as cheap as chips.
Cheers,

Hi
No, i know its more than $1000 and I will add the extra cash
I'm not too clued up on the 35mm f2, what are its strengths? What style of photography is it suited to? I'm a newbie

Kris,
Member Glen posted this thread a few days ago singing the praises of his recently acquired 35mm f/2.
The lens has a formidable reputation and its focal length means that with the 1.5 crop factor it has a similar field of view as the old '
normal' 50mm on film.
It is small, light, stealthy and - perhaps best of all - cheap!! (Well
inexpensive might be a more flattering term to use.)
Cheers,

Kris. The 50/1.4 + SB800 is magic. Check out
this thread from yesterday, which has a number of shots taken with that combo plus
this thread entitled In Love with my SB800 (and 50/1.4)
There's also
this recent thread about the 1.4 vs the 1.8

I personally would go the 50mm 1.8 + SB800, then you've got some cash left over for a new bag, memory card, portable storage or whatever.

Owen,

Owen
Markins 20 is a ball head for a tripod. And 50/1.4 and 50/1.8 are both very usable lenses.

Unless you have a compelling reason to get the 50 1.4 , I'd go with the 1.8, the SB-800 and use the balance on CF cards.

No need for CF cards, I have a 512 and a 1GB. I never fill up either without uploading them so I've decided on the F1.4.
Thanks for everyones input, ill post some pictures soon
