I'm thinking about getting the Tamron SP AF 28-75mm/f2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) macro lens for my Canon 350D, I will be using it for general photography but made mainly for portrait and people photography.

Has anybody got this lense or had any exposure to it? Compared to other similar Canon lenses it seems resonably priced and I've heard that it's a great piece of gear.

Love to hear any feedback.

Thanks
Cyrus

Cyrus, it is a sweet lens. I had contemplated getting this in place of the 18-70 kit lens when I was planning to buy the D70.

It's among the best value f/2.8 standard zoom you're likely to have. The focus is fast, despite being body-driven. The only potential downside is you may find 28mm at the 'wide' end a little restricting, or need to have another lens to cover true wide angles.

Thanks Onyx, I had read about the wide angle limitations but for what I need I think I can justify the loss in that respect. I think I'll be very happy with this lense and can't wait for it to be delivered. I put an order in today at a very decent price from photocontinental but they have been on back order for some time and won't be here until the first week of September. I feel like a kid - the night before Christmas

Just an update on Tamron, I'm not sure if it is a Tamron/Maxwells problem but I was promised that my lens would be in-store on the 5th of September. I rang again today and it still hasn't turned up. I decided to cancel the order and get my (substantial) deposit back to use on other more important things.

I have read in numerous ares about Tamron and their inability to stock certain products. This leaves me with a Sigma or Canon to choose from, and I don't like the quality of the Sigma competitor nor do I like the price of the Canon lens...
