Please note that image critiquing is a matter of give and take: if you post images for critique, and you then expect to receive criticism, then it is also reasonable, fair and appropriate that, in return, you post your critique of the images of other members here as a matter of courtesy. So please do offer your critique of the images of others; your opinion is important, and will help everyone here enjoy their visit to far greater extent. Also please note that, unless you state something to the contrary, other members might attempt to repost your image with their own post processing applied. We see this as an acceptable form of critique, but should you prefer that others not modify your work, this is perfectly ok, and you should state this, either within your post, or within your signature. Images posted here should conform with the general forum guidelines. Image sizes should not exceed 950 pixels along the largest side (height or width) and typically no more than four images per post or thread. My Latest Shoot!Hey All,
Thanks for looking (advise most welcome - good and bad) Cheers dan Last edited by bonou2 on Wed Oct 04, 2006 12:04 am, edited 1 time in total.
I really like the second and third shots a lot! The first one is good but my eye keeps on getting drawn to the blurred bit of hair on the far side...silly I know...and in the last the way her hip is jutting out makes her appear larger than she is..and thats just a girly thing...

Your killing your shots with PP, dude.
Overkill is definitely the word I'd use here. The second would be the only one I'd actually go with out of these. The girl has a great face and is simply stunning, but the second is the only one that actually seems like a working image. Your last one seems wasted on two levels... it's really flat and you're repeating compositions from your past work. Producer & Editor @ GadgetGuy.com.au

I'm not always a big fan of your shots, but I think you've nailed it with #3 here. The high key with the strong focal element of the eye and lashes makes this a great image. Peter

Seriously "whatever" re the overdone PP. I have had MANY more say they like the treatment i use on my photos. I am never going to be a "what you see with your eyes, is what you get" type photographer, so please refrain with the tired old line off "PP overkill"
This comment is mainly directed at one person too by the way! Thanks to the others, your comments much MORE constructive! Its just another sly dig at me from the same old faces/face! Dan Last edited by bonou2 on Tue Oct 03, 2006 11:00 pm, edited 1 time in total.
Re: My Latest Shoot!
You asked for a response why the agro???? P.S. I Like them all.except the last, doesnt work for me. cheers MATT
Hi Dan....I'm new here...I don't know anything about any past comments by anyone here really...or any of your past postings...and honestly feel free to flame me too if you wish... but I sort of thought that when you ask for advice (good and bad)..then thats what you are gonna get... Now I am the first to admit that we all have different tastes and what works for one doesnt always work for the other...but surely everyone is entitled to an opinion...especially if we ask for that opinion. Peace and stuff... ![]() Last edited by Bindii on Tue Oct 03, 2006 11:07 pm, edited 1 time in total.
everyone has an opinion...
I like #1 cos' its different and the pink cast is funky. #2 feels poorly composed and she has no real expression, I think you've done what you can with what was probably a tough shot to save #3 I agree with stubbsy, this is very nice. Try PP'ing in a shot of the earth or something on her eye would look interesting! #4 this is not a flattering pose and hipster jeans make skinny girls look fat they are a bad fashion Re: the PP if that's your thing stick with it - it's just not everybodies! ![]() ![]() I don't get it. If people wanted to make a sly dig they would comment about how you don't know how to spell "advice". I'm not trying to cause any trouble but if you don't want these type of comments about your photos then why post them? Especially whilst asking for good and bad comments.
Thats cool Bindii, what you had to say was great, its just one other that i cant stomach. Cheers dan
Oh my Bob, dude. You've seriously got to stop taking yourself so seriously. I seriously don't care if "MANY more" like your treatment, likewise I don't care if you're not a WYSIWYG photographer. Hell, I PP more than most people. But much like in past images I've commented on, you're over PP-ing here. It seems like you're relying on your PP skills during a shoot rather than your compositional skills.
Hardly. You say "(advise most welcome - good and bad)" and yet the moment someone says something about your PP skills, you jump up for no apparent reason. I feel like we've been down this route before. Producer & Editor @ GadgetGuy.com.au

Mate your just seriously "UP YOURSELF" Post some photos will ya, havent seen anything from you at all? You can dish it out, can you take it too?? I would think NOT! Ohh dont worry, i hadnt posted for a while and now i know why, i had heard about the "unfriendly" nature of SOME on this board, now i know for sure what that was all about. Boysclub anyone?? And please this is only directed at ONE person, i PM'd that person but they are to gutless to reply, thats why i have said it in here!
OK - at the risk of being berated...
![]() The first one does absolutely nothing for me - the star I presume you have added in PP doesn't look like it belongs and it looks like the focal point is the hair rather than the eyes. Perhaps this is for a hair stylist or something? The second shot contains a stunning pose, which is unfortunately (to my eyes) lost by the processing. It's a lovely photo, but I think it would stand on it's own without trying to add to it. I LOVE the eye shot, and in this case, the processing seems right. The last shot is not flattering to the girl at all - the pose is just all wrong. I know this over-processed thing is your 'style' but I'd really like to see some of these shots left alone - many of the pictures you've posted here are well strong enough to stand on their own. Finally, remember that this is the critique section on a photography forum, not a post processing forum. It's not surprising then that you will continue to have some that just don't like the processing! *** When getting there is half the fun! ***
All,
Before this gets out of hand, please remember that we're critiquing the images. That means, Bonou2, that, as per your explicit request, you may get comments that you like, and comments that you do not like. That does not mean that you need to respond, personally, to those comments: the comments were directed at your images, and you need to ensure that any and every comment that you make, too, is similarly directed towrds your images. So, by al means, defend your techniques, or accept the criticism offered. But do not ever again attack any member of this forum: that is not permitted - please reread the FAQs - and I will not accept this behaviour from you again. Now ... the only image of these that almost works is #3. The concept is good, but I too think that the PP is overdone, and I als think it's too soft. g.

My uneducated opinion :
1 would be my pick. However, I can't help but feel that it would have been better with the more "traditional" approach. The composition in #2 just doesn't seems right to me. #3, I'm not really big on high-key stuffs so I guess each to their own here. In this case though, I particularly found it clashing with the eye-pouch ? under her eye. The reflection in the pupil and the eyelash details are abit too strong for me too. #4 the hip ![]() Last edited by asaroha on Tue Oct 03, 2006 11:16 pm, edited 1 time in total.

Your comments are way off target. You have asked for critique. Leigh has given it. You can choose to accept it or ignore it. There is no reason for attacking him just because he didn't say he loved your work. Chill or leave. Peter

Thankyou Sheepie, thats a nicer way of saying what needs to be said. I will look at those pics with different eyes now. Maybe i try to hard. Sometimes the images look stale to me so i add something to them. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesnt! Cheers dan
Jeebus, easy there tiger. Leigh doesn't like your shots, so what? You can take it personally, or you can learn something from his experience and perspective.
Both #2 & #3 could work, but FOR ME (capitalised for emphasis) the PP gets in the way of the image. Please keep posting, but more importantly, think about why you PP & post images, and what might be learnt. There's some incredible wisdom available round here, and often the best advice is blunt and hard to take. So join in the chorus, and sing it one and all!
Look, not getting personal, if you came on here and posted comments about other people's work instead of just posting your own and hoping for the best, you might see that others like myself are making image posts.
First of all, I'm not dishing anything out. I'm making a comment on your work. Second, you'd think wrong. I'm more than used to my fair share of people not liking my work.
Gutless to reply? It couldn't possibly be that you sent the PM 3 minutes prior to making this post and that I couldn't possibly have been doing anything else? If you want to take your anger out on something, yell into a pillow. But honestly, if I were developing anger out of someone criticising my work, I'd shrug it off and move on. That seriously can't be good for your health mentally. Producer & Editor @ GadgetGuy.com.au

number 2 probably has the best pose but the garment(wings) bother the elegance of the shot
as a tip/suggestion you should always consider the presentation of fashion as best you can a good garment can compliment the model not sure if the model styled herself but if you have anythign to do with the styling try your best to style the model appropriately for the theme concept of the shoot good fashion sense goes a long way in achieving that kick ass end result you may want to work with a stylist there are many talented ones out there who would love to work with a photographer in fashion/glamour photography its not a 1 man job you always work with a stylist in some cases they work out garment selection, location and help with poses
Thanks mate, thats the type of advice that i hang my hat on. Not the dribble somone else (who never post his images on here from what i can see) has to say! Cheers Wendellt dan

Dan, apologies, however I'm not going to bother with your posts any more, no matter what I think of your pictures. this is attention seeking behaviour. No one has personally attacked you in this thread.. ah well who cares will you take the time to reflect?
However it's too distressing/time-wasting to have to put up with your puerile comments when you've received from all here tonight some great feedback, from some of the best photographers I know. D3 | 18-200VR | 50:1.4 | 28:2.8 | 35-70 2.8 | 12-24 f4

should be noted though leigh does know wht hes on about he assists a famous fashion photographer James Cant
he may just be too blunt at times, dont take it to heart in the end if you learn something it's worth it and i suggest you need to grow a thicker skin because the fashion industry is pure heartbreak doesnt matter how good you are people like stylists editors, art directors models and clients have strong opinions on certain aesthetics and techniques and they are willing to destroy you on just about every aspect of a shoot not sure about glamour though, but fashion is viscious keep a good attitude be flexible and keep it up
Well said, and i couldnt agree more. Unfortunately, I will do the same as justin. which is unfortunate, because i have been impressed with some of your work in the past.
Dan,
I have already warned you about making personal attacks.
Could you please tell me why we need to continue to put up with your ill-tempered attacks on other members? g.

Well whatever, i am calling it quits. This is just a square peg in a round hole for me i am afraid. You all know each other and this is a coordinated attack on me. PM's flying around everywhere i am sure.
So i wont (this time for sure) be posting here anymore. I know for one thing this time though, i really thought i needed the feedback, but i sooo dont. You got it right when someone said that i shouldn’t care what people say about my images, well i am taking that on board. And GREAT feedback, you have got to be kidding?????? I would hate to see BAD feedback!! Flickr kills this place for dead, maybe because you just get ordinary Joes telling you what they think. Not SO called experts who only want to protect the slice of the pie for them selves! Cheers And BYE!! PS: I wont let the door slam behind me! Bye bye Dan. Sad you're going but in a way it will release the tension you bring in here. Go and find critique somewhere else.
You have been offered nothing but sound advice, CONSTRUCTIVE criticism. Ooops, you're not responding to this are you? Oh well, if you've read it good, if you haven't it's only a few mins of my time ![]() Hint for life: Relax a little. Geoff

You have yet to show any evidence of any attack upon you. Rather, you seem to be behaving in a very childish manner, refusing to accept that not all opinions of your work will agree with your own perception of that work.
You are quite correct on all counts. Yes, you are in need of the feedback. There are few photographers here who would not relish getting some of the comments from some of the experts that frequent these forums. And most are gracious enough to accept the comments in the spririt in which they are intended. And yes, you are also correct that you won;t be posting here any more. We do not, in all honesty, appreciate the aggro that seems to pervade many of your posts. There is no conspiracy here to .... I can't think of what anyone here would conspire against you for, in fact. That's the extent of the nonsense you proscribe. So, yes, good bye. Have a good life. g.

For someone who seems intent on leaving, you seem intent on hovering around and watching your post to see what happens on it.

i just want to add to that comment about keeping a slice of the pie
i think that was directed at me i openly tried to help you get into fashion when you contacted me about it it's really hard work and i can only show you the door you have to do the rest of the work i cant be expected to open the doors and land you a position shooting fashion thats too much hand holding especially considering how much crap i had to do to shoot fashion, nothing in the world is free and i think i give enough advice here to help people anyway so i just hope that 'slice of the pie' comment wasnt directed at me
If i had taken some of the crit to heart that i've recieved over time, not just of photos either, i'd be a mental trainwreck by now
![]() In all seriousness though. I did enjoy quite a lot of works that you had posted up. regardless of the subject. It really is just a shame that you seem hesitant to recieve the negative feedback as being constructive. Best of luck in the future.
