Have we had enough fungi yet?

I am starting to get a little dissapointed with the hard light I tend to use while out and about.
It tends to give me strong shadows. Which are not appealing.
I still want to travel light and have a very quick set up and repack. The folding soft boxes of ATJ's may be some of the answer to my probs. We shall see.
This said I would like some crit on these please.


This was a happy find for me. I found three of simillar colouring on the day.
Probably Hygrocybe graminicolor. This has a slime coating evident in the photo. This was taken on a road cutting under a slight soil overhang.


I just like how dainty some of these look. A Hygocybe species as far as I can tell. This was on a walk along our local creek line with my daughter. She was in the back pack while I was trying to take this. It takes quite a bit of bribery/negotiation to get a two and a half year old to sit still

I have bee pretty excited to find the lovely green fellows so I just had to share regardless.

Awesome colours! There's really nothing I can criticize about these images.

I like these. They're kind of straight up and down and honest. I know what you mean about the light. I've had similar 'hard light' issues with portraits I've been taking and got around the issue with a $12 umbrella and a boom microphone stand (not really what you would want on location though). Light is such a bugger! It's much less of an issue in the second image though as it more blends into the background. Just a thought, you haven't tried available light and a tripod (I don't suppose you'd get the same 'punch' out of the subject though). The focus and resolution are just brilliant. What glass were you using?

but your subjects and composition make up for that! These are awesome looking little fungi, you have portrayed them well, The first I like more since you get an idea of whats underneath and it is such a lovely 'lime' colour.

If I ever go out looking at fungi with you I am gonna end up very high or poisoned! These look sooo very tasty!

......... or a tupperware container, I use a spray bottle over the head of a Metz CT 45....... portable, soft light, down side would be an increase in ISO to get maxium DOF and f stop......

Ian I almost always have my 105 macro on the camera. My most utilised lens.

The tupperware idea is interesting, although I would have to use the cheap imitation kind as the boss would string me up if I used her real stuff.

Both are great shots, but the green one stands out dramatically.

The focus on the inside is spot on, but the loss of depth of field on the top surface is a little disconcerting

Another option for flash diffuser is two layers of milk bottle cut, curved and rubber banded to shape. You can really soften the light by putting a tissue between the two layers of milk bottle, soft but not a lot of light .

One the main things though with the macro fungi is spreading the light around the subject to avoid the harsh background shadows
