Damned early start

Against my usual inclination I dragged myself out of bed at 4:30 am!!!! on Saturday for a sunrise catchup organised by Suren at Newcastle Baths.

Not being used to taking images at such an hour I'm uncertain if I've go the PP right on these so your critique is much appreciated.

The top of the wave on #1 has some sort of artifact or something. It's hard to distinguish it from the sky. For this image at least I think the wave/sky interface is quite important as it highlights that the wave was massive.

Interms of the WB, I think this is up to personal taste. I set it to 5100K (daylight) for sunrise shoots and work from there. I think sometimes that setting is somewhat cool and need a little warming up, especially before the actual sunrise. After the sun is up, usually it looks representative of the scene. Who is to say what WB your eye is set at?

B&W? Definitely not! You would lose these
glorious colours and tones. As far as I can
see, there are not artefacts. Perhaps Surenj
has a better eyesight. I prefer 1,2 & 3 in that
order. Personally, I feel you should get up early
more often.

Suren is saying WB(white balance) not B&W

I quite like the first one, nice pastel colours in the sky but as you say, not sure on the PP. Colour of the water just doesn't come across quite right for me. I would also maybe put in a bit of saturation on the cement strip, just to make it stand out a bit and that would give you some nice separation between the "calmness" in the pool and the really big wave.

I suspect it will another few years before we get you out on another sunrise

Peter, the composition on the first is tops, all PP should be elementary from there on - I quite like the PP on this one, the pink sky looks just a fraction over the top but believeable, the fence in the shot adds scale very well, good spotting!

The headland shot (nobbbys?) is quite nicely composed, but I actually prefer your one with the ship coming into to dock, PP on these, imo, is nice - as Andre mentioned the Pastel colours are great, I am also a sucker for pastel colours!

Looking at your other non-posted shots I think you have some very tidy triptych series

Looks like that 4.30am start was worth it. You have captured some nice colours in the sky here Peter, and your images really show some of Newcastle that I really remember!

I agree. I just looked at again and realised the scale of that wave!

I much prefer the ship entering the habour shot as well.
