Bare Island sunset - dodging the wedding photogsWe had a great time at Bare Island today. The clouds came into play and gave us a category 6.8/10 sunset. [Look elsewhere for a detailed explanations of the sunset ratings]
As usual for your critique.... I have a pano cooking but may have to do some manual adjustments to it before posting....
Re: Bare Island sunset - dodging the wedding photogsThe person fishing adds to the scene - nicely done.
Canon
Re: Bare Island sunset - dodging the wedding photogsLook forward to the pano as the detail on these are awesome.
Really like the fisherman photo - as Big V said - really adds to the photo. Great work
Re: Bare Island sunset - dodging the wedding photogsGood work on these Suren
#1 The exposure is spot on and the water movement provides great foreground interest. I'd try and ring some more detail out of the cliff on the right #2 is the strongest image as far as the elements are concerned but its a little dark for my taste. Given that the sun is higher in the sky than #1 the light should be similar or brighter. #3 best feature from my perspective is the sun/cloud combination and the foreground. The only thing missing is the chicken legged fisherman
Re: Bare Island sunset - dodging the wedding photogsThanks Big V and Spesh. I had to take a few of the fisherman to get him to stay still for the 0.5 second shutter... I couldn't place him at a better position though. Rocks were a little too slippery and there were other fisherman standing nearby. I really wanted the wave action as well. I guess one can't have it all.
Thanks Ray, #1 I got my feet wet for this one... #2 is a little underexposed I think. I'll have a look and post back after a bit of work on it...
This is two exposures combined... I do have a little detail on the cliffs from the overexposure which I will work on... The pano (actually from one day prior) is having serious difficulty as I had forgotten that 10mm focal length is not so pano friendly! What a pity; the sunset was quite nice that day as well.
Re: Bare Island sunset - dodging the wedding photogsNumber 2 all the way, the other two have very well executed elements, however, more often than not the image that stands out is one that includes a prominent subject with the sea and sky to compliment it, you have nailed that here. Top stuff.
yep, that GND should have had a bit of angle...that applies to the 3 images. Great timing on teh first image too - for those not there, there was really one 2 or 3 sets of waves over the hour to generate more than a piddle of water over the rocks and Suren has nailed it here. gerry's photography journey
No amount of processing will fix bad composition - trust me i have tried.
Re: Bare Island sunset - dodging the wedding photogsThanks Gerry for your comments. I think we will need to work more on including humans in our landscapes. Even Brett has started sticking models in his!
How do you mean? Angle it so that it spares the land and dirties the waters? I think that's a good idea, as water is easier to fix than land.... Just copy some from elsewhere... I always struggle with the NDs with this sort of situation... The graduated soft NDs are not strong enough to keep the low lying sun from blowing out and if you use a hard edge then the night falls on the land... I do prefer my reverse grad though... I find that it's ideal for seascapes... They should really make a soft edged reverse grad though.. that would be ideal for seascapes. When are the custom in-camera ND filters coming... ?
Re: Bare Island sunset - dodging the wedding photogs
correct, especially in this case the reflected light of the water is quite bright and whatever variations occur due to the GND crossing the water can be easily corrected - however on the flipside as with the posted images, recovering detail from the rocks/land is increasingly difficult - I have a few the same and the land/rock is just too underexposed to recover anything!
nah, just do a local exposure adjustment, couple this with a increase in contrast and decrease in saturation and that should return the area to a similiar tone/exposure to the remain area - thats what I do anyway! prolly a better way
get that on patent storm now! then work out how the f to make it work gerry's photography journey

Re: Bare Island sunset - dodging the wedding photogs
Iphone style touch interface... pressure(finger) sensitive LCD to do the masking... or how about taking a shot and using your tablet to paint in the areas then retake while on tripod with incamera adjustments
Agreed. Will try next time. Thanks for the tip!
I think so. Will give it a go. I find the lightroom brushes a little clumsy (even with tablet) and laggy to use. Maybe it's my video card...
