Mellow Coogee Sunrise Seascapes

It is not just crazy photographers who get out at the crack of dawn, other people do it as well, however they commonly call it...fitness and there's lots of it at Coogee, sadly though, no photos of fitness here

It was interesting morning with some potentially good compositions, the sky held promise which was short lived, however a few images of what ya all missed.

Comments, suggestions and critique more than welcome.

I like the first one Gerry especially that you managed to get some detail in the clouds. #3 the white thing halfway up on the lhs. ??

I like the first one as well. Well spotted and composed.. I walked straight past it..must've had my eyes still closed.
Shame you couldnt catch the remainder of the railing leading down to the bottom...As it is, it leaves me wondering.

Your getting pretty good at capturing the water movement which adds great drama to the pics..and gets your feet wet

Some really inspiring images - now I want to actually get up and out early enough (and that's not to exercise)

I'm curious to know how much post was done on these images, and how much in camera? Some great colours on the rock face and the exposure length has really captured the water well.

#1 is absolute cracker. I see what Ray is saying about the rail but that's a minor niggle. If you ever print this one, I would try to iron out the right upper as it looks a tad artificial. I do wonder what it would look like if that entire rock thing in the middle magically dissapeared.. Those things happen you know; they are called rock circles in Australia. The Brits seem to have a crap (or crop) version of the same phenomena...


Very tidy wave movements here and they really add to the whole feel; as do the great yellows you seem to conjour up.

#4 I did see this compo and wasn't sure about that big rock on the right.

This set has inspired me to shoot a few more at 90 degrees to the sun. I also liked how you did some flare control behind that rock.

I like #3 the best.
The light on the rocks is great and there's more sky in the shot which makes it look more dramatic than #2.

Well I found the thread from last years Coogee Sunrise - I ave not looked at these since I posted them last year, I am glad I did not either - its very interesting to see how different it was this time around!

thats where them booties are great - it took a few goes and plenty of patience to get the movement (that was why I lived in the same spot for quite a while!), it is even harder cause you have to wait 5-10 minutes for the big wave set to come thru.

I am slowly learning to always check the other direction for sunrises and this was one of them - I really like the lights of the beach in this frame.

The first shot had just the Graduated ND on, the remaining had the screw on ND and Graduated ND. Typically, my better seacapes have about 4 edits in CNX2, excluding any dust/flare/bunnies/bins/people clonage. The edits are usually D-lighting, warmth, contrast (tonal and normal) and control points (rarely more than two). If this takes more than 5 minutes, I give up and move on or come back later with a fresh approach.

If your really keen I can post the original raw converted jpegs - I have done this in some previous posts from memory.

There is no doubt about the improvment. Even your compos are better not to mention the realism. Maybe we will revisit this location in a few months...

I have re-looked through my pics from that outing... I did recover one more which I quite like! I might even print it!


Also I meant to say the rock was intruding in #3 not #4..

Wow... great to hear there's not too much "darkroom" trickery (and yes I'm in awe of all the coogee shots I've seen here recently)

I'd be keen to see (any) one of the original shots - I'm curious as I'm yet to attempt any real landscape shots (but the 17-40 should hopefully push me to do some now).. to be honest the best landscape work I've taken was with a little Minolta P&S

As for getting up early - I'm at least an hours drive from any east-ish facing coast, so it's time to start scouting some alternative locations, or buy a tent (open for suggestion from any other Melbournites)

hey John, although 17 would certainly be adequate, you'd be yearning for wider once get into landscapes. The only good thong about the 17 is that you can stand back a little from the action.
