Playing with water

thought I'd have a play around with the SB800 and some macro this morning. I used blue cellophane over the SB800 to give the water some colour. It's far from the greatest waterdrop shot I've seen, but I like it.

Got to love this flash though.....



The SB800 was used on remote, to the left, with the internal D70 flash acting as Master.

Thoughts/comments appreciated.

Anyone have any tips on focussing ?? I floated a pen in the water and manually focussed, then removed the pen and dropped the water in the same area.

This is a very interesting shot Dave which I feel has been enhanced by the coloured cel. I would love to know what the actual image is within the drop? Well done - I like it.

I like it The water drop is sharp already as it is.

Have you tried the repeating flash function on the SB800? the example they gave in the manual was the bouncing ball but I think it would look pretty neat if u had a water drop falling into the pool and creating a splash

thanks Chris. The setup was done in the bathroom sink and I kept getting a reflection of the tap, so I put a blue towel around it. This is what shows up in the water droplet.

I think this shot is excellent and the idea of the blue cellophane is clever. Certainly makes for a more interesting shot. I guess I really need to spend some more dollars and get me an SB800 - didn't realise that you could use flash to "freeze frame" things (of course I should have since that's effectively what strobe lights do)

This is a really nice photo.

Newbie question: Could you have captured this with a flash mounted ontop of the camera?

I'm thinking of getting a flash and am steering towards the SB600 mainly for its attractive price with Birddog. I don't think the 600 can be used off the camera... am I right in thinking this?

Hi Gecko
the SB600 can be used off camera like the SB800, however the 600 cannot control other flashes. it can only be used as a slave.

You could probably capture this shot with the flash on the camera, not sure if you'd see any shadows behind the water drop or not ??? I thought it made for more interesting lighting being used off camera to the side.
