I was out trying my hardest to get some good B&W Nature shots and snapped this one almost by accident with my 70-300G.

It's a bit of a strange shot but I liked the colour (looked fantastic printed on Canon Pro Paper) and was impressed with the sharpness on a $200 lens. ISO was 320 which makes it more surprising.

I think the trick is (I read this on one of Matt [or was it Gary's] posts) to stop down a little. So this one is a f8 and 300mm.

What do you think (unfortunately it loses the impact in in B&W so won't be in the Challenger).

It's too heavily compressed - have you got a better version of this image?
(bigger != better)

I'm especially interested in the edges on the right, between the leaves and lightsource. In this size, I can't see CA which from my experience the 'G' is fairly lousy at controlling.

i really like the dof in this shot...

would love to see a bit more pp to get rid of some of the blown out highlights on the right...

to me the focus point is the leaf in the front? if so.. i'd crop in a little bit closer...

Nice shot! If you have Photoshop try playing around with the curves control to make it a tad darker. See if you can give it a bit of "pop"

Onyx, here is a bigger version for you. I've just cut down the size a little but not much compression.

Matt and Xerebus. Unfortunately I only have photoshop elements which doesn't even let me look at a curve to play with. If either of you want to have a play with this pic I'd love to see the resuts.

ajo43... just a heads up if you are looking for a 'free' PP tool with the majority of features that PS has... take a look at the gimp.

windows version can be found here: http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/
and some great tutorials can be found here: http://www.gimpguru.org/

cheers and hope this helps.

The GIMP rocks!

And yes... The 70-300G can be sharp... its just limited where you can use it!

I have scored some great photos from this lens... There are two rules I follow when shooting with this glass:

*Stop it down a bit
*Try not to shoot backlit subjects
