who said the 70-300G cant do sharp

I was out trying my hardest to get some good B&W Nature shots and snapped this one almost by accident with my 70-300G.
It's a bit of a strange shot but I liked the colour (looked fantastic printed on Canon Pro Paper) and was impressed with the sharpness on a $200 lens. ISO was 320 which makes it more surprising.
I think the trick is (I read this on one of Matt [or was it Gary's] posts) to stop down a little. So this one is a f8 and 300mm.
What do you think (unfortunately it loses the impact in in B&W so won't be in the Challenger).
