not my best capture but

Got a thin skin? Then look elsewhere. Post a link to an image that you've made, and invite others to offer their critiques. Honesty is encouraged, but please be positive in your constructive criticism. Flaming and just plain nastiness will not be tolerated. Please note that this is not an area for you to showcase your images, nor is this a place for you to show-off where you have been. This is an area for you to post images so that you may share with us a technique that you have mastered, or are trying to master. Typically, no more than about four images should be posted in any one post or thread, and the maximum size of any side of any image should not exceed 950 px.

Forum rules
Please note that image critiquing is a matter of give and take: if you post images for critique, and you then expect to receive criticism, then it is also reasonable, fair and appropriate that, in return, you post your critique of the images of other members here as a matter of courtesy. So please do offer your critique of the images of others; your opinion is important, and will help everyone here enjoy their visit to far greater extent.

Also please note that, unless you state something to the contrary, other members might attempt to repost your image with their own post processing applied. We see this as an acceptable form of critique, but should you prefer that others not modify your work, this is perfectly ok, and you should state this, either within your post, or within your signature.

Images posted here should conform with the general forum guidelines. Image sizes should not exceed 950 pixels along the largest side (height or width) and typically no more than four images per post or thread.

Please also ensure that you have a meaningful location included in your profile. Please refer to the FAQ for details of what "meaningful" is.

I was taking pictures of a college function (my goal is to get enough good images that one day the powers that be actually pay me to do it (and the MORE LENSES!))

I was trying to get pictures of the crowd and from my experinces the detail on these images usually ends up to small to make the images stand out much...
But then the light started doing funky things... and I experimented...
do you think it worked??

Hi MHD

Yep - I think you have something here. Look at the bearded guy sitting on the table for example.
It is a nice shot of humans in a very social setting.
Mind you, if you added in a couple of cartons of Coopers Sparkling, there might have been a bit more social setting :D
I like the width of the photograph but not the digger in the backgound.
Did you use your 70 - 300 lens? No-one seems to have noticed you taking the picture at all.
Cheers

I do like the light on the back of the hair. Makes thinks look kind of 3d.

I think it is a bit busy to really tell a story about the occasion. Maybe if you were closer to the subjects?

yeah,,, I was trying to capture the crowd though...

I'm finding it a hard subject to master...
When I saw the light I went for the bushes you see in the FG to try to frame the picture a bit and give it a bit of depth...

the further I get into photography the more I learn that no amount of PP can beat getting the image right in the first place!

Hi MHD

My 2¢ worth (I like the atmos) would have been to shoot the crowd up or down, i.e. higher or lower viewpoint.

Cheers

The halo effect is good. I would crop out the digger though - close crop to just above the heads of the crowd - would draw your focus more to the crowd also. Would leave the foreground as is tho.
