80-200 with 1.7 TC handheld..... it was never going to work, but what the hell.

Hare at dusk - taken in the middle of a paddock from the car, with the sun streaming from behind the hare.

I know - stupid idea, but had to see if I could do it..... turns out I can't

Okay.. now put the nice lens down and step back slowly.


The worse thing is that I just can't put my finger on why these shots aren't as appealing as your normal stuff Rel. You know I'm your biggest fan but somehow these shots just don't work for me. They're not bad, just not as good as they may have been. Sorry if this makes no sense...

It's probably something about composition, DOF and sharpness not wanting to play well together with that lens/TC combination.

Simon, you've cut me to the bone Only kidding, I KNOW they are crap, but had to see if I could handhold with TC - really should have used a tripod, but was bored and went out and played. Fulfilling my NY resolution - go out and try something I wouldn't normally do .... well, I've done it, and I promise I won't do it again

Hi Rel, some thoughts on the shots: I think there should be more space between the post and the hare, maybe a bit more sky above the bird and the swan is great.

I actually really like 2, with the exception of the left third. Cropping this off leaves a wonderfully arty exercise in depth of field. Just like Leigh's POTW from a while ago showed, it doesn't have to be in focus and sharp to be a good picture (well, one some people see as good anyway)!

Moggy - I agree, but I couldn't move the hare, and didn't have a gun with me (only kidding), will try with more above the bird, and the swan is ok. I think it was an immature, with the amount of noise it was making as it was running across the lagoon

Slider - only very minimal pp work - was some kind of weird effect from the way I took the shot - I don't think I'll handhold that combination again And the wagtail was following me around on the fence line, begging for his shot to be taken, so I obliged

MCWB - I agree - had a look without the left third, and does look better .... might have another go at it
