Copyright issues

Got a thin skin? Then look elsewhere. Post a link to an image that you've made, and invite others to offer their critiques. Honesty is encouraged, but please be positive in your constructive criticism. Flaming and just plain nastiness will not be tolerated. Please note that this is not an area for you to showcase your images, nor is this a place for you to show-off where you have been. This is an area for you to post images so that you may share with us a technique that you have mastered, or are trying to master. Typically, no more than about four images should be posted in any one post or thread, and the maximum size of any side of any image should not exceed 950 px.

Forum rules
Please note that image critiquing is a matter of give and take: if you post images for critique, and you then expect to receive criticism, then it is also reasonable, fair and appropriate that, in return, you post your critique of the images of other members here as a matter of courtesy. So please do offer your critique of the images of others; your opinion is important, and will help everyone here enjoy their visit to far greater extent.

Also please note that, unless you state something to the contrary, other members might attempt to repost your image with their own post processing applied. We see this as an acceptable form of critique, but should you prefer that others not modify your work, this is perfectly ok, and you should state this, either within your post, or within your signature.

Images posted here should conform with the general forum guidelines. Image sizes should not exceed 950 pixels along the largest side (height or width) and typically no more than four images per post or thread.

Please also ensure that you have a meaningful location included in your profile. Please refer to the FAQ for details of what "meaningful" is.

This is another one of those issues with no right answer.

Personally, I hate seeing watermarks or copyright notices slapped over an image. In the corner or outside a frame is fine, for acknowledgement, but some take it too far and stamp massive text across the entire image. Stock image houses are renouned for it, which makes browsing them a painful experience.

If you publish on your own website, there are steps you could take to ensure it's slightly more difficult to steal images from, including disabling the mouse right click - but personally I hate that too, as I usually nagivate using right click, open in new window - for hyperlinks.

Any step you take, can be just as easily overcome if the thief is determined enough. Why not celebrate your love of photography and in the spirit of sharing and allow others fair use?! It's extremely unlikely IMHO for someone to be making money off your images. Most people 'steal' just to have the image as their wallpaper or something to appreciate it, and as an artist you that should give you the warm and fuzzies...

Dont anyone ever disable right-click.
Please....

If someone wants to steal your image they'll end up doing so no matter what you do, doing something that will negatively impact on how people view or navigate your gallery is just going to stop people from visiting.

Like if a real life gallery put up thick flyscreen in front of all the images to prevent a thrown bottle from damaging a photo/painting.. Now the people doing the right thing that just want to appreciate the art cant see the image properly, and if someone wants to damage it they'll throw water on the picture or set it on fire..

Personally I put a small copyright notice outside the image, but if I was going to put up a large detailed picture for whatever reason, I would probably stamp it in big letters to stop people from printing it off...

i used to use a watermark program to label my photos.
got lazy so i now use photoshop to slap my name on the side of each photo.
Although sharing is nice I've had my motorsport images used without my permission on a few occasions now to date.
but i really hate pics with watermarks covering the entire image.
Its up to you how far you want to go.....to stop it completly don't put it up online hehe.
