This is my first self-portrait so be gentle :)

Actually I'd appreciate any comments to help me to get better at portrait shots.

Cheers,
Owen.

For a first try this is a very good effort, I like the use of shadow and light and also the catchlight in your eyes. The angle is probably a little unorthodox, usually shoting from below isn't very flattering, but unlike me you don't have a double chin causing you issues. For me this shot could of been stronger with a subtel rim light that brought out the silhouette of your head from behind. Overal a great first try, what sort of light where you using ?

I have a double flood light that I bought from Bunnings, I had one pointed at me and the other pointed at the black backdrop  obviously that one didn't do a thing! :)

Thanks for the idea about the rim lighting, I was practicing that as well so I'll keep at it.

Many thanks,
Owen.

Owen I like it. If I had one piece of advice i'd try cropping some of the black boundary down the left hand side so your profile is centred on the left edge of the frame looking into space. It looks more effective IMO. Hope that makes sense :) cheers

Thanks Marco. I actually cut around my head and pasted onto a black background... it was hard to decide where I belonged :) lol
