Merewether Baths at night

Hi,

I was out at the Merewether baths on Thursday night. Got a few that I would appreciate some C&C.

All were taken with D70s and kit lens.

Starting blocks, long exposure 71sec.


Do you think I should crop out the lights of the ships at the top?

This one was a shorter exposure, only 30sec.


Which of the two work better?

The pumphouse was nicely lit up, does the composition and exposure work?


Comments good and/or bad much appreciated.

I tyhink #3 is my favourite here, the composition works really well. I like the diffuse glow effect you have. The reflection of the pump house balances the shot nicely.

Andre, The first one is a little better without the ship's lights distracting the viewer.
No. 2, for my money, would have seen me on the other side of the No.5 mounting block shooting the "Lord of the Rings" mini mountain range visible in the middle background there. With that mist in the back, all sorts of magic are possible there.

I like the pumphouse shot, although the dome highlights are a bit blown out (at least on my monitor, which is possible as I am using my laptop). Good composition and an interesting subject.

#2 works best for me, very nice light and long exposure effects

#2 is the pick.

in #1 I think the ship lights are a bit of a distraction,

#3 I like the glow that the stainless steel rails appear to have, and the reflection from the pumphouse in the puddle balances everything out nicely.

No 2. looks kinda spooky. Looks like they could be headstones in a cemetary.

I'm also going for #3 followed by #2.

In #3 my only gripe is that I would have liked it a little to the right, so as not to cut off the hand rail. Very cool otherwise. Well done.

Here is the first one without the lights.



Macka, I actually was very careful in not cutting it off, but I ended up having a crooked horizon and in the realignment, lost the edge. It was bugging me too, I'll go back and see if I can recover. I'll also see about recovering some of those highlights, bibble has a feature to help with that, time to try it out.

All great and very atmospheric shots and I prefer the first pic with the lights cropped off. The ship lights are too distracting

the pump house is my favorite, great composition
I like the coloring and the exposure on this shot
I think you should try and get back to this shot with the tide in so you get the misty water effect with the walkway and pump house floating in the mist

I wanted to know, are these baths operational, or abandoned. The photos have an errie, abandoned feel to them

Fantastic composition in the third! The idea is perfect with how you have captured the reflection! Fantastic idea as it makes the image.

thanks for the latest comments, was away for a few weeks, so didn't see them till now.

Chet, these baths are very much operational. It wouldn't be very easy to get a swimming lane in summer. The photos were taken in winter and at night, not too many swimmers then. However, they do get used during the day in winter even, brrrrrrr.
