According to "Wildlife of greater Brisbane", the bird is a White Faced Heron also known as a blue crane. The book says it is a very common bird whose habitat is Australia wide and also (gasp) in New Zealand and islands.
For Greg B the scientific name of this bird is Egretta novaehollandiae
Hope this helps John
Cheers
Graham

I thought the question was addressed to our esteemed Patron and Gitzo Guru, but suffered from inadequate punctuation, ie
What is this, Birdy?
