Overexposed portraits

I think correct exposure and an appealing end result are both relative things

This series of portraits shot with the nikkor 85mm f1.4 used high iso and slower shutterspeeds to blow out the skin and background which gives the overall image a certain mood, also fixes up blemishes and dark spots on the face.
I fiddled with the white balance to get these as white as possible

this one has been smoothed out in photoshoip due to banding(jpeg images)
Image

look at at that delicious creamy bokeh!

Image

shot wide open at f1.4, you can see the softness, but for portraiture it's a good soft

this image shows the correct exposure and white balance

Very nice photos Wendell, and I agree that the overexposed look suits them very well.

Nice shots Wendell. #1 has a spacey feel to it. I like #2 and #4 for the soft natural look the exposure has given them. Cheers, Mick

Great shots wendell, number 3 is my favourite shot too, but the girl in #2 is seriously cute

Waw, nice series...

Number 1 doesn't really work because the overexp erases her face 'frame' just up the model's left eye.

Number 2 has great skin tone and is really nice except for this bit of strong reflection in the model's right eye.

My fav is definitely number 3 - warm white balance, slight overexp, and the way the model looks outside the frame; it all conveys a strong moody atmosphere.

Regarding number 4, I like the "non-natural" ones, it makes the model's blue eyes stand out.

Generally speaking I like to overexp portraits too for exactly the same reasons you mentioned - fixing skin blemishes and dark spots... However, I'm pretty sure that top-notch professional results requires quite a bit of post-processing!

Hi Wendell,
with #1 I think a much tighter crop would be more appropriate, it looks as if she has gorrilla arms in proportion to her face, however love the way you captured her eyes.

Top pics as usual Wendell. I think the most important factor in 1,2 and 4 are the eyes. Lovely, sharp and mesmerising that you forget there are other elements in the pic :)

#3 is very nostalgic - one of your traits and styles I've noticed in some of your pics.

Wow, they are all excellent, I actually quite like #1, with those eyes and the expression she has. #3 is very good too, maby a bit too soft?

Number 2 does it for me - (what it does, I won't say  ) the eyes have it!

#3 has a nice dreamy quality, too. Well done (again)

Cheers

Wendell I always enjoy your stuff...

The first one is captivating, seems dreamy soft (although I'm not sure, the arms seems "bigger" or something? Effect from close-up?), The second almost seems floating it's so seperated from the background and love the tones in #3... Great stuff...
